LA multimodal transport plan to be less car-centric?

LA multimodal transport plan to be less car-centric? | Transport terrestre- ground transportation | Scoop.it
The Los Angeles City Council will vote Tuesday on a new 20-year transportation vision that no longer treats the car as king of the road.

Via Editor

Editor's curator insight, August 15, 2015 3:40 AM

The age of 'the car as king' is over. Cities - and their populations - need a smarter approach that includes #gomultimodal options.

Excerpt: The new plan would replace the one the city adopted in 1999, which was focused on relieving congestion and moving cars as fast as possible through city streets. But a lot has changed in the last 16 years. Los Angeles is in the middle of a public transit building boom, bicycle ridership is growing and more people are choosing to live without a car. California has committed to dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which means cutting the amount of driving people do in fossil-fuel-powered cars, and state law now demands that cities develop so-called Complete Streets that are designed to safely accommodate all users, including cyclists, transit riders, pedestrians and the disabled — as well as motorists. The old vision of widening streets and accelerating car traffic isn't possible or practical anymore.

Multimodal cities. Will Uber fill the vacuum?

Multimodal cities. Will Uber fill the vacuum? | Transport terrestre- ground transportation | Scoop.it
Modern cities need to plan multimodal networks to get people on public transport. If they don't, Uber could fill the gap and increase traffic volume.

Via Editor
more...
Editor's curator insight, July 3, 2015 3:55 AM

This is our own blog post. Our premise is that if cities get their multimodal public transport infrastructure right, then people will use that as their preferred way of getting from A to B. Get it wrong, and people will use taxis to fill the gaps in a city network.

As Uber is a cost-effective alternative to taxis, you could argue that Uber actually efficiency-tests a city's transport network. The less effective the public network is ... the more popular Uber will be.

That's the great thing about disruptive technologies. They throw a spotlight on inefficient ways of doing things.
