Shipyard Safety

AFor my dad's work, had a lot of fun making this video.Even if I did look silly.

Md Maniruzzaman's insight:

Accidents where workers are struck by falling objects are very common. The injuries can be very severe or fatal. Objects do not fall off by themselves. They fall off because of careless practices and poor Housekeeping.

Falling from one level to another is a major workplace hazard and is the most common cause of death from traumatic injuries in construction. Fall hazards occur in all industries and most fatalities occur from a relatively low height. It is vital to secure the health and safety of workers by undertaking adequate risk management.

Workplace Safety: Electrical Safety

Workplace Safety video training you in electrical safety.
Md Maniruzzaman's insight:

All electrical systems have the potential to cause harm. Electrical accidents are the leading cause of work-related deaths in the workplace. Developing electrical safety policies and training employees to follow these policies is just one way to reduce the risk of electrical accidents. Conducting regular safety inspections also makes it possible to identify and correct electrical hazards before they cause accidents. When employees do not follow established electrical safety procedures, they increase the risk of electrical accidents in the workplace. Examples of unsafe practices related to the use of electricity include operating electrical equipment in wet areas, yanking plugs out of outlets instead of removing them carefully, failing to wear personal protective equipment that prevents the body from conducting electricity, using machines that have known electrical defects and ignoring warning signs related to electricity in the work area.

Ferry Tragedy Exposes Need for Safety Culture - Korea Real Time - WSJ

Ferry Tragedy Exposes Need for Safety Culture - Korea Real Time - WSJ | Mani's Occupational Health and Safety CQU | Scoop.it
The Sewol ferry tragedy has raised many issues—among the most pressing the need to reform South Korea’s workplace health-and-safety regulations.
Md Maniruzzaman's insight:

Building a strong workplace safety culture requires everybody to be on board. We cannot create a real safety culture if management is just handing down safety pronouncements from above or workers are making suggestions for safety improvements that are ignored. The active engagement of business managers and rank and file employees is critical in establishing a truly effective workplace safety program. Another important step in creating an effective workplace safety culture is to make safety an important element in job performance appraisals. Many large businesses today have invested tens of millions of dollars and many thousands of man hours in their safety programs. Maintaining safety is considered part of the job, just like productivity or continuing education. Rewarding both management and employees for good safety is also an effective way to increase "buy in" to a strong workplace safety culture.

Md Maniruzzaman's insight:

A work accident is a "discrete occurrence in the course of work" leading to physical or mental occupational injury. As part of managing the health and safety in workplace, company must control the risks in the workplace. To do this, company needs to think about what might cause harm to people and decide whether company is doing enough to prevent that. This process is known as risk assessment. Risk assessment is about identifying and taking sensible and proportionate measures to control the risks in the workplace, not about creating huge amounts of paperwork.

What is Asbestosis?

What is Asbestosis? | Mani's Occupational Health and Safety CQU | Scoop.it
Asbestosis is a condition of the lungs specifically related to the breathing of asbestos. Asbestos fibers are very tiny fibers that, when inhaled, cause scarring of the lung tissue.
Md Maniruzzaman's insight:

It is important that safe work procedures are in place when carrying out asbestos work or asbestos-related work to prevent fibres becoming airborne. Asbestos is the generic term for a number of fibrous silicate minerals. Breathing in asbestos fibres can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Asbestos fibres can pose a risk to health if airborne, as inhalation is the main way that asbestos enters the body. Small quantities of asbestos fibres are present in the air at all times, and are being breathed by everyone without any ill effects. Most people are exposed to very small amounts of asbestos as they go about their daily lives and do not develop asbestos-related health problems.
