wava dixon's insight:

Plutonium: A chemical element of atomic number 94, its a dense silvery radioactive metal.

Uranium 235:a uranium isotope with mass number 235; capable of sustaining chain reactions.

Uranium238:the commonest isotope of uranium; it is not fissionable but when irradiated with neutrons it produces fissionable plutonium 239.

Atom:Basic unit of a chemical element.

Neutrons:a subatomic particle of about the same mass as a proton but without an electric charge, present in all atomic nuclei except those of ordinary hydrogen.

Gas Diffusion method:Gas diffusion refers to a surgical sterilization method for heat, moisture, or pressure-sensitive items, with the exception of food, drugs, or liquids.

Thermal Diffusion Method: A uranium fluoride liquid compound in a long vertical pipe is sandwiched between a hot surface and a cold one.

Electromagnetic Method: A uranium chlorine salt is vaporated  then the atoms are electrically charged and projected through a strong magnetic field which causes their paths to curve.

Implosion Type: A small sphere of plutonium is surrounded by a much larger sphere of high explosives.

Clinton Engineer Works: A government reservation of 59,000 acres located 18 miles west of Knoxville, Tennessee, acquired in the autumn of 1942.

wava dixon's insight:

This document shows how much detail was done into perfecting the outcome of the Manhattan Project. Many notes and details about how they wanted the bomb in order down to the target area. They wanted to bomb an area of Japan where their manufacturing was done, and get rid of the aircraft industry. This source states they just wanted to abliterate areas of Japan, wanting to drop a bomb every month by the end of 1945. They percicley put together all the information they needed incuding weather reports and locations to test out the bombs effects.

wava dixon's insight:

The bomb they produced, has undergone many tests. Estimated to have an effect of 5,00 to 20,00 tons of TNT, and a possibility of 100,00 toms, this bomb was obviously made to destroy its prey. Using three methods of producing the material needed to cause the explosive: The Gas Diffusion Method, The Thermal Diffusion Method, and The Electromagnetic Method. all three describe how the use of Uranium fluoride gas, and liquid compounds are put together along with U-235 and U-238 which are explosive substances.

wava dixon's insight:

This Document described how the U.S. wanted to have the atomic bomb to win the war and save lives. Saying it will perserve world peace. It described the two main materials used to make this world saving bomb, Platonium and Uranium-235, using diffrent methods to carry out the ''desired purity''. Bringing other chemicals together at an extremely rapid rate so it will explode.
