'Good cholesterol' created in the lab could someday treat cardiovascular and other diseases

'Good cholesterol' created in the lab could someday treat cardiovascular and other diseases | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
A new type of "good cholesterol," made in the lab, could one day deliver drugs to where they are needed in the body to treat disease or be used in medical imaging, according to scientists.
Carlos Fosca's insight:

"The scientists showed that microfluidics - the same technology that enabled the invention of inkjet printers - allowed them to make material called µHDL that looks and acts like HDL (high-density lipoprotein) in a single, rapid step. Not only does this material offer a possible, easy new way to treat cardiovascular disease, but the researchers also attached drug compounds, as well as dyes and nanocrystals used in medical imaging (such as those used for MRIs and CT scans), to the particles."

A Double-edged Sword: Transformational Leadership and Individual Creativity

Transformational #Leadership and Individual #Creativity http://t.co/d3N32Y4Bx4

Via Dr. Susan Bainbridge
Carlos Fosca's insight:

"we argue that transformational leadership has two parallel effects. On the one hand, transformational leaders are assumed to
influence followers’ creativity positively, because they provide them with intellectual stimulation and serve as role models for unconventional behaviour and an original thinking style.

On the other hand and particularly due to their charisma and their narcissistic tendencies, transformational leaders are also likely to promote followers’ dependency which in turn may have a negative
impact on followers’ creativity. This negative side effect of transformational leadership via an increase in followers’ dependency is expected to attenuate the positive influence of transformational
leadership on followers’ creativity."

Why is EMPATHY the key to brand success in the 21st century? | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it

THE PROMISE OF EMPATHYIn 2008, Karina Encarnacion, an eight year-old girl from Missouri, wrote to President-elect Barack Obama with some advice about what kind of dog he should get for his daughters.

She also suggested that he enforce recycling and ban unnecessary wars.

Obama wrote to thank her, and offered some advice of his own:

“If you don’t already know what it means, I want you to look up the word ‘empathy’ in the dictionary. I believe we don’t have enough empathy in our world today,   and it is up to your generation to change that.”

Researchers measure creativity

Researchers measure creativity | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
A team of researchers led by a Michigan State University neuroscientist has created a quick but reliable test that can measure a person's creativity from single spoken words.
Carlos Fosca's insight:

"The participants were measured for creativity through a series of more in-depth methods including story writing, drawing and their creative achievements in real life.

The results: Those who gave creative answers in the noun-verb test were indeed the most creative as measured by the more in-depth methods. This suggests the noun-verb test, or a future variation, could be successful by itself in measuring creativity."

Carlos Fosca's insight:

"The growing power of computer vision is a crucial first step for the next generation of computing, robotic and artificial intelligence systems. Once machines can identify objects and understand their environments, they can be freed to move around in the world. And once robots become mobile they will be increasingly capable of extending the reach of humans or replacing them."

Specific brain regions can be trained by means of video games

Specific brain regions can be trained by means of video games | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Video gaming causes increases in the brain regions responsible for spatial orientation, memory formation and strategic planning as well as fine motor skills.
Carlos Fosca's insight:

"While previous studies have shown differences in brain structure of video gamers, the present study can demonstrate the direct causal link between video gaming and a volumetric brain increase. This proves that specific brain regions can be trained by means of video games", says study leader Simone Kühn, senior scientist at the Center for Lifespan Psychology at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development. Therefore Simone Kühn and her colleagues assume that video games could be therapeutically useful for patients with mental disorders in which brain regions are altered or reduced in size, e.g. schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorderor neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's dementia."
