How to create a computer in a test tube

How to create a computer in a test tube | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
How many individual molecules does it take to automatically create a circuit? The answer: one, if you use light to switch it on and off, say scientists at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the University of Konstanz.

The trick: a strong bond between individual atoms that weakens in one location and forms again precisely when energy is pumped into the structure.

Welcome To The Age Of 4D Printers

Welcome To The Age Of 4D Printers | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Welcome to Future World where the weird is commonplace! To wit: engineers at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science have created a 4D printer. That doesn’t mean the printer outputs objects into the space-time continuum. Instead, it means they are building objects that can change based on the physics of the materials used. By extruding objects in multiple materials, for example, you can build a valve that shuts down when hot water hits it or a working mechanism that is printed in one piece.

Kiribati and Climate Change

You might not be feeling the effects of climate change, but Kiribati, a small country in the Pacific, is actually drowning because of rising sea levels. Check out how the government there is trying to run a country that might not exist in a few years.

Seth Dixon's curator insight, March 24, 12:35 PM

The impacts of climate change might feel far off or something that will affect other places...not so for the citizens of Kiribati.  This video is the 1 minute version of the political/environmental situation, and this is the 15 minute version.

Norka McAlister's curator insight, Today, 5:21 PM

Utterly there is no doubt that climate change has affected the country of Kiribati. It is predicted that in a several years, the ocean will flood all the lands of Kiribati. Currently, however, there are a lot of issues in Kiribati such as health, sanitation, clean water, pollution, waste, and resource shortage. In this video we can argue that erosion is causing the land to sink in this region. The problem is how the government will handle this issue. It is expected that there will be a significant spike in migration out of this country. There is a program that is training citizens to learn skills sets that will allow them to be able to migrate to other regions when the time comes. They will be considered refugees and have to face assimilation and acculturation in their new surroundings and will have to abandon their native cultures in order to adapt. There is only so much these refugee receiver countries can handle. For example, in the case of Egypt, which allowed 130,000 refugees from Syria into their country, is now experiencing issues with overpopulation and lack of finances. As a result, government officials were forced to close the border. This will be a common occurrence as Kiribati citizens find new lands in which to establish a home. In the meantime, Kiribati’s government and citizens need to act fast and effectively to find a solution to the climate change.

Makerbot’s Saddest Hour

Makerbot’s Saddest Hour | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it

In the process of growth, startups change. They change from scrappy three-person operations to behemoths with new employees rolling in daily. They go on hiring sprees and the founders no longer know the people sitting at cubicles outside their offices. Bigger companies – Google and the like – start sniffing around. And those changes add up – going from 50 mph to lightspeed is as hard on the Millennium Falcon as it is on a manufacturing company. That’s what’s happening at Makerbot right now.

Estados Unidos quiere videojuegos educativos en los colegios

Estados Unidos quiere videojuegos educativos en los colegios | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it

The Basic Principles of Strategy Haven’t Changed in 30 Years

The Basic Principles of Strategy Haven’t Changed in 30 Years | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it

Almost every time I teach the basic concepts of strategy — the five forces framework or the principles of competitive advantage — I get the same question. “These ideas are more than 30 years old,” managers complain. “Isn’t there anything more recent?”

Unfortunately, this question demonstrates a lack of understanding of the nature of knowledge. It the same as saying to a maths professor who is explaining the principles of calculus, “These ideas are more than 100 years old. What are the new ideas?”
