Wearable tech heart rate tracking is 'incredibly accurate'

Wearable tech heart rate tracking is 'incredibly accurate' | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Wrist-based heart rate monitors get a bad rap, especially when it comes to the new wave of devices from the likes of Fitbit, Mio and Apple.

But Professor Greg Whyte has told Wareable that, in reality, the criticism levelled at wearable and heart rate tracking accuracy is unfair. And while it should be noted that he's an ambassador for Fitbit, Whyte is a highly respected sports performance scientist, a former Olympic athlete and leads the Centre for Human Health & Performance at Harley Street in London – so he has little to gain by spouting any propaganda in his field.

Augmented Reality Can Increase Productivity

Augmented Reality Can Increase Productivity | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Technological and cultural shifts that result in enhancements in manufacturing tend to increase complexity in products and processes. In turn, this complexity increases requirements in manufacturing and puts added pressure on organizations to squeeze out inefficiencies and lower costs where and when feasible.

This trend is acute in aerospace, where complexity, quality and safety require a large portion of final assembly to be done by humans. Corporations like AREA member Boeing are finding ways to improve assembly workflows by making tasks easier and faster to perform with less errors.

Augmented Reality Glasses could Allow Text Encryption

Augmented Reality Glasses could Allow Text Encryption | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Augmented reality glasses do not have a good reputation when it comes to privacy. However, researchers at the University of North Carolina think that these glasses could actually provide excellent privacy to the wearer through encrypted communication. Sensitive data for these AR glasses would not be decrypted on computer screens. Only the recipient will be able to see the decrypted data in their eyes. The researchers at the university have developed a trial system of supposed “visual cryptography” which is designed to send secret messages to the wearer of an augmented reality headset.

'Sometimes I'm terrified' of the Internet of Things, says father of the Internet

'Sometimes I'm terrified' of the Internet of Things, says father of the Internet | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Vint Cerf is known as a "father of the Internet," and like any good parent, he worries about his offspring -- most recently, the IoT.

"Sometimes I'm terrified by it," he said in a news briefing Monday at the Heidelberg Laureate Forum in Germany. "It's a combination of appliances and software, and I'm always nervous about software -- software has bugs."

The Internet of Things will offer the ability to manage many of the appliances we depend on, acknowledged Cerf, who won the Turing Award in 2004. With its ability to continuously monitor such devices, it also promises new insight into our use of resources, he said.
