The Eight Dimensions of Strategic Thinking

The Eight Dimensions of Strategic Thinking | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
I would like to describe a model for developing an effective strategic planning process. Most organizations do a poor job at planning and even poorer at execution. One of the major reasons that most strategic development plans fail is that most strategy models are one or two dimensional. SWOTs, Boston Consulting Matrix and the famous 7S model are all deficient in that they are not comprehensive and holistic. Most models oversimplify the Zeitgeist that is out there in the social and economic environments impacting organizations. Too many models deal with only a few of the key dimensions that affect organizations.

Watch This Double Amputee Control Two Robotic Arms At Once | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
It’s rare to see the future unfold in front of our eyes this dramatically but here it is: the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab has helped a man who lost both his arms in a “freak electrical accident” connect to dual robotic arms by connecting to and reading from his nervous system. The results aren’t quite staggering as he still has limited control over the arms but the future is bright for amputees.
Carlos Fosca's insight:

Impresionante ejemplo de como la tecnología puede ayudar a mejorar ostensiblemente la calidad de vida de personas con serias discapacidades.

The Importance of Putting the Human Interaction Back Into HR

The Importance of Putting the Human Interaction Back Into HR | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Instead of empowering new employees from before Day One, some companies de-magnetize their enthusiasm with a first day filled with barely legible photocopied paperwork, horribly dry employee handbooks, and outdated training manuals that haven’t been updated since 1999.

All that anticipation and highly engaged first-day energy is completely wiped out by the onboarding electronic magnetic pulse, and then we’re left for dead in a paperwork wilderness.

As I’ve mentioned many times in the past, I’ve played Human Resources on TV, but I have actually done the blocking and tackling associated with sourcing, screening, hiring and onboarding. I know first-hand, at least in smaller companies, that we’ve been quite guilty of a paper-intensive onboarding experience.

Big Idea 2015: The Unexpected Path to Creative Breakthroughs

Big Idea 2015: The Unexpected Path to Creative Breakthroughs | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Some say the world is divided into humanities people and science people; artists and geeks; intuitive types and analytical types. You’re either one or the other, and our culture, education system, workplaces and news media do their level best to reinforce this divide. But throughout history, it’s been proven over and again that if you want to be truly innovative, reaching across the divide between the sciences and the arts is the starting point for triggering the boldest ideas.

From Leonardo Da Vinci to Frank Gehry, some of our greatest achievers have balanced that territory between art and science, or, as Steve Jobs repeatedly stated, the intersection between technology and liberal arts.

Ajay Chopra is a general partner at Trinity Ventures, with investments in several digital media and m-commerce companies including TubeMogul (IPO), Fitstar, Zirx, Dynamic Signal, Blend and Deliv. He is on the board of RadiumOne. Prior to joining Trinity Ventures, he co-founded Pinnacle Systems.

There are major changes afoot in advertising technology at the moment, but not everyone has realized how transformational these changes are. Indeed, analysts have talked about four types of business models in the ad-tech ecosystem, but have not discussed the underlying innovation that is driving the more leveraged of these models.

So what should investors be looking for in ad-tech companies as they navigate the ad-tech landscape?

ViscoTec Dosing Technology Enables Precision 3D Printing with Silicone and Paste

ViscoTec Dosing Technology Enables Precision 3D Printing with Silicone and Paste | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
By Scott J Grunewald
Viscosity is the enemy of 3D printing. It is the rate that a liquid deforms when placed on a flat surface, and materials that are pumped through printing heads, regardless of the size opening, are held hostage to it. The usefulness of both highly viscous materials like molten plastic, and materials with comparatively lower viscosity like paste, chocolate and silicone all have limits to the resolution that can be achieved using typical 3D printing extruders. But a developer of dosing technology has entered the 3D printing market with their technology and has seemingly managed to push past those resolution limits.

Handwriting vs typing: is the pen still mightier than the keyboard?

Handwriting vs typing: is the pen still mightier than the keyboard? | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
No one can say precisely how much handwriting has declined, but in June a British survey of 2,000 people gave some idea of the extent of the damage. According to the study, commissioned by Docmail, a printing and mailing company, one in three respondents had not written anything by hand in the previous six months. On average they had not put pen to paper in the previous 41 days. People undoubtedly write more than they suppose, but one thing is certain: with information technology we can write so fast that handwritten copy is fast disappearing in the workplace.

Peru’s Innovation Drive

Peru’s Innovation Drive | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
After five years of heady growth in Peru, many experts say the country’s economy will slow down sharply in the future because of political uncertainty. The first round of presidential polls on April 10, 2011, set the stage for a June runoff between the leftist Ollanta Humala, a former military commander, and right-winger Keiko Fujimori, […]

Research: 10 Traits of Innovative Leaders - HBR

Research: 10 Traits of Innovative Leaders - HBR | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Many organizations would like their leaders to create more innovative teams. But how exactly should they do this? If you ask highly innovative leaders what makes them effective you are apt to hear, “Well, I don’t know. I haven’t thought about it.” Or they will make something up that sounds compelling. But the fact of the matter is that people who excel at something aren’t usually very good at pinpointing exactly what accounts for their skill.

So to find out more, we conducted our own study. We began by collaborating with a respected organization in the telecommunications industry whose leaders scored well above average on most managerial competencies. We identified 33 individuals who scored at or above the 99th percentile on innovation, as measured by their peers, subordinates, and bosses in a comprehensive 360-degree feedback survey.  We believed these closest colleagues would have the most accurate view of what made this group of leaders stand out from the pack in this large organization.

Today’s Most Important Strategy: Building a Culture of Agility

Today’s Most Important Strategy: Building a Culture of Agility | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it

"What company in the world has not been going through sudden shifts from major, disruptive change?

These are all the necessary things to do to react to change, but these actions usually only treat the symptoms of a chronic illness – hardening of corporate arteries – without curing the underlying cause.

Companies may be missing out on the most important strategy of all: Creating a culture of agility. This should be every CEO’s first strategic priority because it is the culture that enables companies to flex nimbly in any direction and execute any strategy."

Although the technology hasn’t yet lived up to its hype as the harbinger of a new industrial revolution, investments in 3D printing technology have surged in 2014.

Last year, spending on 3D printing and additive manufacturing hit $3.07 billion dollars, according to a report from industry analyst group Wohlers Associates. That number is projected to reach $12.8 billion by 2018, and $21 billion by 2020, according to the group.

Connectivity has changed our view of work and workplaces, thanks to the lightning speed of information sharing and an increasing level of transparency that none of us anticipated. In terms of talent and organizations — this brings us to the edge of a great canyon, looking beyond. Whether we traverse the topography with ease, or with great stress, depends on our commitment to that new world of work. Work environments need to evolve with the times (now multi-generational), and organizations must keep pace.

El lado oscuro de la educación superior - Especiales - Colombia | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it

Metamaterials: Driving Performance in New Directions

Metamaterials: Driving Performance in New Directions | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it

"Metamaterials get their amazing mechanical, electromagnetic, and acoustic properties from carefully controlled microstructures rather than from chemistry alone. They are increasingly the subject of media hype over their prospects and what miracles they may bring—invisibility and inaudibility cloaks, buildings immune to earthquakes, and ships without wakes. Developers are taking the underlying principle that says a material’s patterned structure affects its physical and pushing the properties achieved by patterning much further, using more complex structural patterns. In some cases, the properties achieved are not only different than typical bulk properties for that material, but unachievable by unpatterned materials."
