Neuroplasticity: can you rewire your brain?

Neuroplasticity: can you rewire your brain? | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Neuroplasticity is an umbrella term, commonly used to mean that the brain and nervous system is plastic (or malleable), and can be remodelled or ‘re-wired’ in response to experiences over a lifetime.
Your brain is made up of 100 billion or so neurons each making up to 10,000 connections, or synapses, with other neurons. Neurons communicate by sending chemical signals across the synapse, with neurotransmitter release determined by patterns of neural impulses.

Learning from the Persuasive Genius of Great Leaders

Learning from the Persuasive Genius of Great Leaders | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it

Great leaders look for empowering frames and communicate them explicitly, to ensure others understand their intent and interpret their actions through the new lens, rather than old frames.

The art of framing is an essential skill for executives who want to motivate and inspire.

donhornsby's curator insight, March 24, 9:35 AM

(From the article): Every conversation, every communication, and every decision begins with a frame. When we provide a context that expands our thinking, includes others, and gives meaning to our efforts, we help spark creativity and insight in ourselves, our peers, and our leaders. Perhaps that explains the old Disney company joke encouraging its animators and designers to challenge a limiting frame:

“How many Imagineers does it take to change a lightbulb?”

“Does it have to be a lightbulb?”

Genes Involved in Memory and Learning Activated when Professional Musicians Perform

Genes Involved in Memory and Learning Activated when Professional Musicians Perform | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Music performance is known to induce structural and functional changes to the human brain and enhance cognition. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying music performance have been so far unexplored. A Finnish research group has now investigated the effect of music performance (in a 2 hr concert) on the gene expression profiles of professional musicians from Tapiola Sinfonietta (a professional orchestra) and Sibelius-Academy (a music university).

Playing music enhanced the activity of genes involved in dopaminergic neurotransmission, motor function, learning and memory. Some of the up-regulated genes like SNCA, FOS and DUSP1 are known to contribute to song perception and production in songbirds suggesting a potential evolutionary conservation in molecular mechanisms related to sound production across species.

3D Robotics, the largest U.S.-based drone manufacturer, today announced the launch of DroneKit, its open-source API for writing drone apps. Because 3D Robotics has always taken a platform approach, DroneKit will work with any drone that uses its APM autopilot (and while there are quite a few of those on the market, though this won’t work with any of the popular DJI drones, for example). Developers can write web-based drone apps with this new API, as well as mobile apps and apps that run right on the drone itself (written in Python).

Boosting the Brain’s Creative Powers & Creating the Best Environment for Innovation

Boosting the Brain’s Creative Powers & Creating the Best Environment for Innovation | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
An area of brain research that reveals our capacity for learning creative thinking is the growing evidence that the brain is in fact plastic (Norman Doidge’s book ‘The Brain that Changes Itself’, 2007, is a great introduction to this concept). Apparently the brain is not completely wired with location-specific neural pathways that are preset according to genetic coding and then established for life. Accumulated research supports the idea that it is possible to ‘rewire’ the brain at any stage in life to form new and varied connections.
