How to stop high school from stifling creativity

How to stop high school from stifling creativity | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Teenagers’ growing sense of independence can lead students to a self-motivated and fulfilling education
Carlos Fosca's insight:

..."Research indicates that approximately two-thirds of students become “intellectually disengaged” from their education during high school, partly because the teenage years are when young people develop a sense of personal autonomy and resistance to authority.

But that same sense of independent agency, properly nurtured and encouraged through innovative approaches to learning, can lead students to a self-motivated and fulfilling education..."

Augmented Reality in a Contact Lens - IEEE Spectrum

Augmented Reality in a Contact Lens - IEEE Spectrum | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
The human eye is a perceptual powerhouse. It can see millions of colors, adjust easily to shifting light conditions, and transmit information to the brain at a rate exceeding that of a high-speed Internet connection.

But why stop there?

In the Terminator movies, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character sees the world with data superimposed on his visual field—virtual captions that enhance the cyborg’s scan of a scene. In stories by the science fiction author Vernor Vinge, characters rely on electronic contact lenses, rather than smartphones or brain implants, for seamless access to information that appears right before their eyes.

Skin-Based Generators Scavenge Muscle Motion to Power Wearables

Skin-Based Generators Scavenge Muscle Motion to Power Wearables | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Using human skin as one of its charge-collectors, a new flexible generator converts muscle movements into enough power for small electronics. The postage-stamp-sized device takes advantage of static electricity to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.

Such friction-powered generators could usher new types of wearable sensors that don’t require batteries but instead are powered by the wearer’s daily activities like walking, talking or holding an object.

MIT Lincoln Laboratory hosts first "Make Your Own Wearables" workshop for high-school girls | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
"Close your eyes and picture an engineer," said mechanical engineer Kristen Railey '13 to the group of 50 high-school girls gathered in Lincoln Laboratory's cafeteria on Dec. 13, 2014, for an engineering workshop. "Okay, open your eyes and raise your hand if you imagined Mark Zuckerberg, a car mechanic, or characters from 'The Big Bang Theory.'" It was clear these references had struck a chord with the girls, as dozens of hands immediately flew up. "Now," she directed, "raise your hand if you imagined someone like me." Fewer than five hands shot up in the air.

Debunking Disruptive Innovation – Why Disruptive Innovation is NOT a Strategy

Debunking Disruptive Innovation – Why Disruptive Innovation is NOT a Strategy | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it

"In today’s innovation-obsessed world, “disruption” encapsulates the Holy Grail.  Incremental and sustaining innovations are the all-too-often overlooked steps that lead you there.  Christensen’s theory is fundamentally about technologiesand products.  The real world rewards those who build new business models, extend brands, create new channels, find new markets, redesign customer experiences, re-invent business processes, and other stuff that most seasoned innovators know truly shape the future."

Juan Miguel Galeas's curator insight, January 26, 12:29 AM

A new electronic implant can fight bacterial infection inside the body and then harmlessly dissolve. The simple, passive device is made entirely of silk and magnesium, which are both benign, biocompatible materials. The device, which can be loaded with antibiotics, could be implanted inside the body during surgery and then wirelessly triggered from outside to kill bacteria using heat or by releasing drugs. Once its work is done, it would dissolve.
