Massive Online Courses Are Terrible for Students and Professors

Massive Online Courses Are Terrible for Students and Professors | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
The word mooc sounds a bit like slang from Goodfellas or the affectionate shortening of the already-affectionate name of a former outfielder for the New York Mets.

Carlos Fosca's insight:

The-Neuroscience-of-Learning

"Learning is a critical organizational competency—so much so that Arie De Geus’ statement has become almost a truism today. Yet, most organizations do not effectively build this competency at an organizational or individual level. A study of the effectiveness of organizational training conducted by Cross (2002) concluded that only 10 to 20 percent of formal organizational training transfers to the job. On the other hand, informal learning—which accounts for at least 80 percent of organizational learning—and is the very essence of the learning that de Geus is referring to—happens in an ad hoc manner, without design or strategy"

In The Future, Spider Silk May Help Grow Your Replacement Heart

In The Future, Spider Silk May Help Grow Your Replacement Heart | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
There’s been a lot of talk lately about how spider silk is this crazy wonder material that may soon find its way into everything from electronics to ultra-strong fabrics. Now, there’s another reason to be excited about spider silk: doctors might one day use the stuff to grow you a new heart.

Growing new organs and tissues outside the body is the bleeding edge of biomedical research. Just imagine: if doctors could grow replacement hearts or kidneys from a patient’s own stem cells, that patient would no longer have to face the agonizing prospect of waiting to find a suitable donor.

We Need To Get The Internet Of Things Right

We Need To Get The Internet Of Things Right | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
It seems everything is connected to the Internet: socks, shoes, shirts, hats, glasses, appliances, beds, homes, drones, cars and even diapers. Yet, for the Internet of Things (IoT) to play a role in shaping our future, we need to get a few things right. The statement “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it” has never been more applicable. At the events and conferences I’ve attended this year, it’s clear that while everything is getting connected, few things are actually connected.

Some of you may recall the term “network of networks.” We are in real danger of making the same mistake again — only this time on a massive scale. With IoT, we are not taking full advantage of the Metcalfe effect where value increases exponentially as more things are connected. Instead, we are creating islands of technology.

Why a Sleeping Brain Isn’t Exactly Resting

Why a Sleeping Brain Isn’t Exactly Resting | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
There’s new evidence that the brain’s activity during sleep isn’t random. And the findings could help explain why the brain consumes so much energy even when it appears to be resting.

“There is something that’s going on in a very structured manner during rest and during sleep,” says Stanford neurologist Dr. Josef Parvizi, “and that will, of course, require energy consumption.”

For a long time, scientists dismissed the brain’s electrical activity during rest and sleep as meaningless “noise.” But then studies using fMRI began to reveal patterns suggesting coordinated activity.
