MOOCSs: 20 ways to monetise

MOOCSs: 20 ways to monetise | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it

No one should deliver a MOOC without considering income but pure ‘monetisation’ is the wrong term, as a MOOC is an activity that needs to be seen in terms of both costs and income over time. So I’ll come at this as if it was both an income and cost issue, namely its impact on your profit & loss account. Note also that an institution could position its financial goal as an investment, aim for break-even or go for profit. Monetisation is ot just about profits.

Embedding Learning in Work: The Benefits and Challenges

Embedding Learning in Work: The Benefits and Challenges | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it

"A 2009 study by the Learning & Development Roundtable, a division of the Corporate Executive Board, reported that on-the-job learning had three times the impact on performance improvement over formal training programs. The same study found employees with high exposure to on-the-job learning activities were 262% more engaged than those who had no exposure to on-the-job learning. ‘High exposure’ in this study was defined as being engaged in ‘11 or more on-the-job learning activities during the last month’.

A further 2010 study of manager development activities by Casebow and Ferguson at GoodPractice in Edinburgh, Scotland reported that informal chats with colleagues was both the most frequently used development activity and was also seen as the most effective by the majority of managers."

Make room for creativity in the workplace

Make room for creativity in the workplace | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
“Businesses must build in creative breaks in the working day. Forget all the talk about sending employees on creativity training courses, but make sure that creativity emerges in everyday work, which therefore should have space for good breaks. Creativity emerges when our brains think slowly after having worked hard. That’s why smoking breaks are good — and it should be OK to take breaks without smoking too.”

Managing Talent In A Networked Age, Part I

Managing Talent In A Networked Age, Part I | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Success in Silicon Valley is all about people — about how companies build lasting alliances with talented teams of entrepreneurial employees. Outsiders sometimes think that recruiting and keeping great people in the Valley requires offering Google-like perks or eye-popping compensation packages. In fact, it’s far more powerful to treat an employee like an “ally,” be realistic about how long they’ll likely stay at your company, and then offer a promise of career transformation if they work for you. That’s something every startup can do — even those still in the bootstrapping stage.

This reminded me of what someone said about the difference between Facebook and Twitter (but regret I can't remember who):

Facebook is the place to go to connect with the people you went to schools with.

Twitter is the place to go to connect with the people you WISHED you had gone to school with.

It works for me!

Mei Lin Fung's curator insight, November 8, 3:57 PM

Just over a week ago, I attended a great conference organized by Ray Wang CEO of Constellation Research - I tweeted almost 2000 times - he'd gamified the tweeting and set up a leaderboard, so it raised my competitive instincts. it was interesting to see for myself what would cause me to send out so many tweets - it was a fascinating conference - and you scored more points with photos, so during the conference I learned to illustrate almost every tweet with photos. The psychology of twitter is still evolving.... as I am finding out myself as I learn to interact with this new medium

Why Experts Reject Creativity

Why Experts Reject Creativity | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
The researchers found that new ideas—those that remixed information in surprising ways—got worse scores from everyone, but they were particularly punished by experts. "Everyone dislikes novelty,” Lakhami explained to me, but “experts tend to be over-critical of proposals in their own domain." Knowledge doesn’t just turn us into critical thinkers. It maybe turns us into over-critical thinkers. (In the real world, everybody has encountered a variety of this: A real or self-proclaimed expert who's impatient with new ideas, because they challenge his ego, piercing the armor of his expertise

In the 1990s, cognitive scientists John Kounios and Mark Beeman started studying the insightful moment when you’re suddenly able to see things differently, also known as the “aha!” or eureka moment.

This moment occurs when you go from being stuck on a problem to having the ability to reinterpret a “stimulus, situation, or event to produce a nonobvious, nondominant interpretation.”

API copyrights a “threat” to tech sector, scientists tell Supreme Court

API copyrights a “threat” to tech sector, scientists tell Supreme Court | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it

"Dozens of computer scientists are urging the Supreme Court to overturn a May federal appeals court decision that said application programming interfaces (APIs) are subject to copyright protections.

The computer scientists, ranging from Vinton "Vint" Cerf—a father of the Internet—to Python creator Guido van Rossum, want the nation's high court to reverse the appellate ruling that said Oracle's Java API's were copyrightable"

Carlos Fosca's insight:
