The Rise of Innovative Districts

"Today, innovation is taking place where people can come together, not in isolated spaces. Innovation districts are this century's productive geography, they are both competitive places and 'cool spaces' and they will transform your city and metropolis."

Seth Dixon's curator insight, June 20, 2:19 PM

As described by the Brookings Institution in their exploration regarding innovation districts, they are geographic areas where leading-edge companies, research institutions, start-ups, and business incubators are located in dense proximity. These districts are created to facilitate new connections and ideas, speed up the commercialization of those ideas, and support urban economies by growing jobs in ways that leverage their distinct economic position.

Why sustainable buildings need to focus on community and collaboration

Why sustainable buildings need to focus on community and collaboration | Managing Technology and Talent for Learning & Innovation | Scoop.it
Sustainable office buildings are about more than just reducing carbon emissions.
Carlos Fosca's insight:

"According to the government, buildings in the UK account for about 43% of all carbon emissions; when you also consider the amount of other resources they require, such as water, and the amount of energy that goes into transporting millions of us to work every day, it's clear we need to make our buildings more sustainable".

Interesantes infografias en la que se muestran las huellas ecológicas de diferentes ciudades. Se aprecia claramente que las ciudades de USA son las que poseen los mayores índices de impacto ambiental aún cuando no son las pobladas.

Blake Welborn's curator insight, May 20, 12:15 PM

This a conglomeration of maps that represent the physical layout and land use of some of the major cities in the world, color coded by region.

Amanda Morgan's curator insight, September 18, 12:49 PM

The comparison of urban footprints certainly puts a lot of factors into perspective.  Whenever I am in highly populated areas such as Atlanta and New York, I feel like the area is so densely populated. But shift over to Sao Paulo which is so much smaller than New York, but just as populated.

Jacob Crowell's curator insight, October 14, 3:25 PM

This is an interesting way to graph out the urban footprints of various cities from around the world. This also shows how the United States has a number of the largest urban centers in the world. Along the top, New York, Chicago, LA, and Miami are massive compared to cities like Hong Kong. This shows how in the United States there are massive amounts of urban growth. Even in China where their population is one of the worlds biggest, Hong Kong a major city only has 7.1 million. In the United States, for the past century cities have been growing and this graph shows that.

The production of soils is an act of sustainability, yet compost is a currency that can be traded

What a great humanitarian project.

Christopher Whelan's curator insight, October 24, 2013 7:15 PM

This type of product is a great reminder that innovation is everywhere and that ideas are never truly complete. A great example of forward thinking, the Gravity Light tackles the kind of problem that should be focused on more. Just because most people living in the United States can afford electricity does not mean there should not be alternative solutions available such as this. Although this device was created to help the less fortunate (and by the looks of it, it will) does not preclude the privileged from benefiting as well. Inventions such as this have the ability to not only promote the world's standard of living, but also stimulate the minds of others.

Dave McKeague's curator insight, October 26, 2013 4:01 PM

This is a product that Brand Project should invest in.

Carlos Fosca's insight:

Over three-fifths (62%) of the respondents are board members or C-level executives, the rest being other senior managers. Drawn from a range of industries, half of the firms surveyed generate over $500m in annual revenue, and 25% of respondents had direct authority over their organisation's sustainability endeavours.."
