Great Leaders Know When to Forgive

Great Leaders Know When to Forgive | what management is and what management should or could be | Scoop.it

Leaders must be firm and foster accountability, but they also must know when to forgive past wrongs in the service of building a brighter future. One of the most courageous acts of leadership is to forgo the temptation to take revenge on those on the other side of an issue or those who opposed the leader's rise to power.

Some entrepreneurs become entrepreneurs out of revenge for a precived wrong from an employer.  If revenge is part of your story, how is that emotion serving you now?  Is it time to forgive?

donhornsby's curator insight, February 27, 2013 6:26 AM

(From the article): Anger and blame are unproductive emotions that tie up energy in destroying rather than creating. People who want to save a marriage, for example, must let go of the desire to hurt a partner the way they think the partner has hurt them and instead make a gesture of reconciliation.

Those whose main motivation is to settle scores and get payback — to obstruct rather than construct — are on the wrong side of history. Their legacy is not rebuilding, but rubble. From (ahem) members of Congress to leaders in any turnaround situation, it's a lesson worth remembering: Taking revenge can destroy countries, companies, and relationships. Forgiveness can rebuild them.

Why Great CEOs Aren’t Always Great Leaders

Why Great CEOs Aren’t Always Great Leaders | what management is and what management should or could be | Scoop.it

Great CEOs are often people in a race to the future – they’re obsessed with defining the future because they can’t stomach the thought of reacting to a future created by their competitors. Somehow Steve Jobs was able to see the unseen, and marshal Apple’s resources to deliver the innovation that fulfilled his view of what lied ahead. In the process, Apple became the most valuable corporation on the face of the earth and Steve Jobs the greatest CEO of our time. But was he the greatest leader of our time? Apple shareholders would likely nod to this. Former subordinates, who suffered from his autocratic and abrasive style, might differ.

You could be the one that enables fearless (but informed) innovation and experimentation – or you can be the one holding up the instruction book saying, “That’s not how we do it.” The choice is yours.

People who cannot forgive get stuck into a downward spiral of negativity, taking everyone around them with them.
