luiy's curator insight, June 5, 2013 8:19 AM

Complex adaptive systems are all around us. Most things we take for granted are complex adaptive systems, and the agents in every system exist and behave in total ignorance of the concept but that does not impede their contribution to the system. Complex Adaptive Systems are a model for thinking about the world around us not a model for predicting what will happen. I have found that in nearly all situations I can view what is happening in Complex Adaptive Systems terms and that this opens up a variety of new options which give me more choice and more freedom.

Uncertainty, Innovation, and the Alchemy of Fear

The ability to live in the question long enough for genius to emerge is a touchstone of creative success. In fact, a 2008 study published in the Journal of Creative Behavior revealed tolerance for ambiguity to be “significantly and positively related” to creativity.

Philippe Olivier Clement's curator insight, May 13, 2013 9:07 AM

The Cynefin Framework and emotional intelligence

The Cynefin Framework and emotional intelligence | Complex systems and projects | Scoop.it

By attending a very inspiring workshop with Robert Dilts about « Leadership in times of uncertainty » in Bruxelles this week-end, some analogies with the Cynefin Framework of Dave Snowden (that I presented previously) emerged in my mind.
Taking as base the « Revised Leadership Table » by D. Snowden, I put on the paper some reflexions about further leadership dimensions.

Placing Strategic Bets in the Face of Uncertainty

Placing Strategic Bets in the Face of Uncertainty | Complex systems and projects | Scoop.it

Too many people expect strategy to provide certainty. (Strategy needs to be agile).

Philippe Vallat's insight:

To the point: "So rather than seeing strategy as a way to get rid of uncertainty, think about strategy as a way of dealing productively with life's inevitable uncertainty, by continuously making and updating your bets about the future."

Why Rituals Work: Scientific American

Why Rituals Work: Scientific American | Complex systems and projects | Scoop.it

Recent research suggests that rituals may be more rational than they appear. Why? Because even simple rituals can be extremely effective. Rituals performed after experiencing losses – from loved ones to lotteries – do alleviate grief, and rituals performed before high-pressure tasks – like singing in public – do in fact reduce anxiety and increase people’s confidence. What’s more, rituals appear to benefit even people who claim not to believe that rituals work. While anthropologists have documented rituals across cultures, this earlier research has been primarily observational. Recently, a series of investigations by psychologists have revealed intriguing new results demonstrating that rituals can have a causal impact on people’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

It is indeed needed to know and acknowledge the difference , because many mistakes are made to use tools like Lean 6sigma,balancedscorecard, for complex problems , while they should use for complicated.

The big difference is order and unorder, predictibility and risk.
