Leverage Points: Places to Intervene in a System

Leverage Points: Places to Intervene in a System | Complex systems and projects | Scoop.it

Folks who do systems analysis have a great belief in “leverage points.” These are places within a complex system (a corporation, an economy, a living body, a city, an ecosystem) where a small shift in one thing can produce big changes in everything.

Philippe Vallat's insight:

I like the final quote: "Magical leverage points are not easily accessible, even if we know where they are and which direction to push on them. There are no cheap tickets to mastery. You have to work hard at it, whether that means rigorously analyzing a system or rigorously casting off your own paradigms and throwing yourself into the humility of Not Knowing. In the end, it seems that mastery has less to do with pushing leverage points than it does with strategically, profoundly, madly letting go."

A Neuroscientist's Radical Theory of How Networks Become Conscious

A Neuroscientist's Radical Theory of How Networks Become Conscious | Complex systems and projects | Scoop.it

It’s a question that’s perplexed philosophers for centuries and scientists for decades: Where does consciousness come from? We know it exists, at least in ourselves. But how it arises from chemistry and electricity in our brains is an unsolved mystery.

Neuroscientist Christof Koch, chief scientific officer at the Allen Institute for Brain Science, thinks he might know the answer. According to Koch, consciousness arises within any sufficiently complex, information-processing system. All animals, from humans on down to earthworms, are conscious; even the internet could be. That’s just the way the universe works.

Perhaps I'm missing something. I see the diagram with circles in it very large as a 'wallpaper' background, that I can't navigate round and some live links in the middles, one of which bring up a small version of the diagram but that will only come up yo a smallish picture about ten centimetres across.

Collapse des systèmes complexes

Collapse des systèmes complexes | Complex systems and projects | Scoop.it

Voir la mondialisation autrement… penser le monde autrement ;-) | Complex systems and projects | Scoop.it
