Google Slashes Prices on Google Drive

Google Slashes Prices on Google Drive | Management Information Systems | Scoop.it
A handy 100GB will set you back just $1.99
Benjamin Ayers's insight:

Google seriously undercuts Cloud storage competition with their new pricing. While Apple offers 15gigs of iCloud storage for $20/year, Google offers that amount for free. Apple's 50gig plan costs $100, while Google’s 1,000gig plan costs a mere $120/year. I literally just went and upgraded to the 1tb plan and started importing my data to the cloud. This presents a huge threat to other cloud storage solutions, and they will need to dramatically reduce prices to stay competitive. While Apple has users hooked with the illusion of high switching costs, it will probably stay the high cost leader in the market, as users will be more willing to stick with Apple. It’s great seeing the cost of cloud storage drop so significantly.

4 Ways CasaTunes Is Not Like Sonos | Evolver.fm | Management Information Systems | Scoop.it

our group project is on Sonos wireless speakers. This product is a new entrant in the market that is offering some distinctive complimentary services and features that could potentially do some damage to Sonos' customer base. Sonos has been the leader in wireless sound, but that could all change if Casatunes and others keep up with innovation and differentiation.

Phys.Org Mobile: Beyond the Moore's Law: Nanocomputing using nanowire tiles | Management Information Systems | Scoop.it
Benjamin Ayers's insight:

It's interesting watching the fundamentals of Moore's Law hold true with the new generation of processors. It makes me wonder if the law will ever start slowing down. After a certain point, the growth will be so exponential. Will Moore's law be able to hold once technology expands so much?

Privacy Groups Bring WhatsApp Worries to FTC's Door

Privacy Groups Bring WhatsApp Worries to FTC's Door | Management Information Systems | Scoop.it
The consumer privacy backlash stirred up by Facebook's recent deal to purchase WhatsApp for $19 billion is now in full swing. The Electronic Privacy Information Center and the Center for Digital Democracy jointly filed a complaint about the deal with the FTC. Following the announcement of the agreement, both companies offered reassurances that WhatsApp user data would be safe from Facebook.
Benjamin Ayers's insight:

Privacy advocates are trying to keep the separation of the church (FB) and state (WhatsApp) after the pending purchase. Facebook is infamous for absorbing and conglomerating data from companies that it has purchased, and advocates are trying to ensure that FB can't do this again with WhatsApp. Interesting timing with our debates tomorrow about online privacy.

Windows 8 Devices Get Cheap - InformationWeek

Windows 8 Devices Get Cheap - InformationWeek | Management Information Systems | Scoop.it
Microsoft will reportedly cut Windows license fees to encourage production of sub-$250 Windows 8 devices, including non-touch PCs.
Benjamin Ayers's insight:

Microsoft lowers the cost of their OS by 70% for PC makers, allowing for lower costs for products. Looks like Microsoft is trying to lower the threat of substitute products, making the cost of Apple devices even a higher jump between products. I'm interested in how this will affect Microsoft's market share on PC's and tablets.

Will Netflix be the savior of net neutrality? Or a fifth column?

Will Netflix be the savior of net neutrality? Or a fifth column? | Management Information Systems | Scoop.it
Netflix , feeling fat and happy from a great year -- 44 million members at the end of 2013, up 33% from a year earlier -- threw down the gauntlet to Internet service providers who may be plotting to throttle its video streams.
Benjamin Ayers's insight:

A very interesting possibility for the future of net neutrality and/or discrimination. I'm interested to hear the follow ups on the court rulings regarding the issue of ISP's restricting video streams and how that will affect Netflix, as well as the entire industry. I'm not sure if I agree with the court's ruling, but it could prove to be quite interesting on the future of video streaming.
