Some people find that minimizing technological distractions helps them focus on themselves and the outside world.
Jens Hoffmann's insight:
What comes after the revolution in personal tech? The low tech movement. Have you already discovered, that in the end, it doesn't matter what tool you use to jot down your latest idea, but how thorough your thinking is? It is not about the latest Getting-Things-Done-App, but that you get things done. And deep relationships are requiring focus and dialogue, and not continuous-partial-attention.R Real achievement is about the essence and not the tool. Delete the scoop?

An interesting pattern begins to emerge when you look at which issues leaders seem to struggle with clearly identifying as areas of weakness or risk within their organization.
Consider them Blind Spots – those unseen things that create danger that we don’t react to until too late. Excelling at never being blind to these issues will clearly make the difference between being average and being great in your career. Habits are behaviors wired so deeply in our brains that we perform them automatically. This allows you to follow the same route to work every day without thinking about it, liberating your brain to ponder other things, such as what to make for dinner. However, the brain's executive command center does not completely relinquish control of habitual behavior Via Dimitris Agorastos Delete the scoop?

Knowledge workers now comprise 40% of the American workforce. According to Morgan Stanley economist, Stephen Roach, knowledge workers are the most rapidly growing segment of white-collar employment. Within the last seven years knowledge worker employment growth has averaged 3.5% per year making their productivity vital to the competiveness of both organizations and the country. It is only within the last 10 years that much of the growth in knowledge workers has occurred. This has left most managers unprepared for interacting with this new kind of worker. The contrasts outlined above, show that managing a knowledge worker needs to be very different from the command and control method of management that most organizations currently employ. Not only does command and control not improve knowledge worker productivity, it too often does the opposite - it makes knowledge workers less productive. Delete the scoop?

Jens Hoffmann's insight:
Best hint to overcome procrastination: "Give up on yourself. Don't try to stop being “a procrastinator” or ” a lazy person”. It is distracting waste of time; what mattered is action. “Go ahead and be the best imperfect person you can be, and get started on those things you want to accomplish before you die.” Don’t worry about getting motivated." Was machen, wenn man schnell einen Sachverhalt verständlich machen muss, und die Zeit nicht ausreicht, einen Infografiker (Designer spezialisiert auf Informationsdesign) zu beauftragen und diese gemeinsam zu entwickeln. Christakis has done important work on "contagion" in social networks and in this talk (transcript or video) touches on the interdisciplinary study of cooperation that I've been talking about for ten years. -- Howard
"Incidentally, related to that, it's not just that a biological hurricane is approaching the social sciences. Social sciences are generating questions that biologists are becoming interested in. One of my favorite examples of this is cooperation. This is a topic that social scientists have been interested in for a very long time, and evolutionary biologists as well. But now this is drilling down even to the cellular or molecular level, and people are beginning to ask questions about how sub-organismic biological entities “cooperate,” and what does it mean for biology?" We all know that risk management is supposed to manage risks. But people often understand very different things when they use the word “risk”. One way to solve this problem would be to insist that everyone uses the definitions found in risk standards and guidelines. These definitions have usually been produced by groups of experts who work hard to be clear, to say what they mean and to mean what they say. Unfortunately most people ignore official definitions when they manage risk in practice. Instead they rely on their own ideas about risk which are often limited or misleading. This in turn can reduce the effectiveness of the risk process and stop it delivering the full range of potential value. Via Michael Leber Delete the scoop?

Santa Fe Institute will be launching a series of MOOCs (Massive Open On-line Courses), covering the field of complex systems science. In this ten-week course, you'll learn about the tools used by complex systems scientists to understand, and sometimes to control, complex systems. The topics you'll learn about include dynamics, chaos, fractals, information theory, computation theory, evolution and adaptation, agent-based modeling, and networks. You’ll also get a sense of how these topics fit together to help explain how complexity arises and evolves in nature, society, and technology. Delete the scoop?
