What is a Startup CEO’s real job? | Management & Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
[This post is a bit long so I narrated it on the Umano platform - you can listen to it on the app here: https://umano.me/c/OLr26] Startups are unique animals: “a startup is an organization formed to
Nguyen Trieu Khang's insight:
Very interesting article of Noam Boardin, founder of Waze. He's sharing his experience and point of view of what is really important for the CEO of a startup. Of course, each CEO will focus on different operational activities depending on his/her own skills (business, tech, creative, commercial...) but in all cases, he/she is the captain of the boat.
- Set the vision
- "Hold the line" (like in Gladiator)
- "Hold the line" (bis repetita), determining the most important thing to do / focus
- Enable rapid decision making and adjustment.

CIOs who master digital transformations will win CEO jobs

CIOs who master digital transformations will win CEO jobs | Management & Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
CIOs who work closely with CEOs to direct digital strategies will eventually find themselves in the CEO’s seat themselves, according to Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff.
Nguyen Trieu Khang's insight:
A logical consequence of "Software is eating the word" (as written by Marc Andreessen back already in 2011): CIO who master technological understandings and disruptions are naturally well positioned to lead the way in a company. Provided that they are also able to have a 360 vision not restrained to technology.

Scrum does not work here in Asia — Software Craftmanship

Scrum does not work here in Asia - Software Craftmanship - Medium
After helping many organisations in Asia transitioning into Agility, I have observed why Scrum does not work here in Asi…
Nguyen Trieu Khang's insight:
Pretty interesting point of view: Scrum, or more generally Agile, can not thrive in Asia because of different factors, the main one being Asian cultures which wouldn't be suited to this kind of approach.

Actually, this is something you may also translate to other cultures such as French culture. One might say that France is a democracy, cultivating equality, etc... so this should a positive basis for Agile. In reality, French culture is still very hierarchical, command and control, etc... That's why adoption of Agile in French companies is not easy either.

But it doesn't mean that it is not possible as I have seen in my experience: it means that you need to be more subtle and take into account specificity of each culture when deploying Scrum and Agile rather than trying to adopt a "one method fits all". Going straight the American way won't work. There's a whole coaching of teams and management to work on the representation of self, power, recognition.

Some Thoughts on Agile Transformation in Big Companies -

Some Thoughts on Agile Transformation in Big Companies - | Management & Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
As usual… I’ve gotten a little sidetracked on my Agile 101, 102… series of posts. I’ve got the 201 post half finished, but haven’t been able to spend the time getting over the hump. That said, I want to divert just a little and talk about agile in general, explore some of what it is, …
Nguyen Trieu Khang's insight:

Interesting article written in 2014 but still up to date. The first necessary condition, even though not sufficient, is a top-down impulsion with a leader at the top level supporting / giving enough freedom to start the move towards agility. This starts with an exemplary behavior consistent with agile principles from this leader to ignite the process.

Some other conditions will include DevOps, continuous integration and testing, coaching teams towards a new mindset, test & learn approach...

The Fourth Industrial Revolution demands that CEOs take responsibility for the massive transformation of their businesses and for the extraordinary impact that this transformation will have on wider society
Nguyen Trieu Khang's insight:

"new digital business models are the principal reason why just over half of the names of companies on the Fortune 500 have disappeared since the year 2000" : for existing companies, it is a question of survival and the digital transformation they must accomplish requires a real revolution in the mindset of all employees, especially of managers and C-level executives.

How to cross the age divide.
Nguyen Trieu Khang's insight:

Companies tend to think about how to get rid of senior employees as digital is transforming more and more businesses. My experience is that senior employees have deep knowledge that can help accelerate expertise of younger employees who master the tech but not the business but often management and HR are quite bad to take value from that.

A former Zappos manager explains how her job changed after the company got rid of bosses

A former Zappos manager explains how her job changed after the company got rid of bosses | Management & Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
Nguyen Trieu Khang's insight:
Zappos, one of the company well known for pushing Holacracy, a new approach to manage a company, as far as possible. Worth noting that:
- The big boss, Tony Hsieh, is the founder of the company, not just a "named by shareholders" CEO, so impulsion can come from the top, it's deeply rooted in the DNA of the company.
- As stated in this article, not everything went smooth, the path is tricky and some people won't match with this philosophy, be them managers or staff.
- But those who made their journey find it really rewarding.
Really interesting to see that this approach can scale in a company big as Zappos.

The digital transformation of industry | Publications | Publications | Roland Berger
Nguyen Trieu Khang's insight:
A very comprehensive report on what is also called "Industry 4.0", a concept largely led by Germany to re-invent its industries by using the most of technologies.

This is a key issue for Europe, as China also launched in 2015 its ambitious program "Made in China 2025" which also aims at making Chinese industries top-class and not only low cost. A real shift showing that China will not satisfies itself with just a title of "factory of the world' but will look to become a leading nation ahead of the US and Europe.

Strangely enough, in France there are little awareness on this subject, the media and politics showing a dark future of industry with continuous loss of productivity and jobs and not talking about re-inventing industries.
