New York Library / TEN Arquitectos

New York Library / TEN Arquitectos | Making something from nothing | Scoop.it

In a neighborhood of high-end retail and luxury residences, this new branch library will fulfill a much needed role as a public space and touchstone for the local community and visiting tourists across from the Museum of Modern Art.

Despite the library’s site being predominantly below grade and set at the base of a new 40-story hotel, this design proposal transforms the dark, subterranean space into an inviting, open and light-filled civic landscape in the heart of Manhattan...

Becky Poisson's insight:

Don't know if it is practical to retrofit but it is a clever use of space and creates accessibility at a somewhat non-technical level.

Becky Poisson's insight:

As with any good graphic design, the boldness of line and color catch your eye and ignite your interest but it is the study of the illusions that capture your heart.

Nathan Walsh is a British painter who can't get enough of urban landscapes. The artist pays tribute to places like New York City and Chicago via painstaking details in the paintings below.
Becky Poisson's insight:

Always striving to interpret, find another perspective or just have fun, mustering up some courage to create realism is an eye opening and creative eureka moment.  The devil and the insights are in the details.

David Foster Wallace’s Timeless Graduation Speech on the Meaning of Life, Adapted in a Short Film

David Foster Wallace’s Timeless Graduation Speech on the Meaning of Life, Adapted in a Short Film | Making something from nothing | Scoop.it

by Maria Popova

"On May 21, 2005, David Foster Wallace got up before the graduating class of Kenyon college and delivered one of history’s most memorable commencement addresses. It wasn’t until Wallace’s death in 2008 that the speech took on a life of its own under the title This Is Water, and was even adapted into a short book. Now, the fine folks of The Glossary have remixed an abridged version of Wallace’s original audio with a sequence of aptly chosen images to give one pause:"

Wallace: “The real value of a real education … has almost nothing to do with knowledge and everything to do with simple awareness.”

Elaborate Light Painting Photography

Elaborate Light Painting Photography | Making something from nothing | Scoop.it

Can’t afford those expensive studio lights for you photography set-up? Why not use flashlights? That’s what a group of photographers did to create some stunning images for the new social media site HeartStories. Production designer Rachael Currie came up with the idea to solely use flashlights to paint the scene, and with a long exposure and a couple of people running around waving flashlights, it was a success.
