How the Indie Audio Community Is Transforming Storytelling

Jesse Shapins: "[...] documentary is a relatively fluid genre that operates in so many different contexts at such varied lengths (broadcast news magazines, long-form series, live performance, "listening rooms," etc.), the people engaged in it are more open to redefining and experimenting with its boundaries than those who are entrenched in more established modes of documentary (e.g., classic voiceover-driven video docs)."

Startup Professionals Musings

Founder is ready, willing, and able to learn. We have all known entrepreneurs whose egos are so large that they can’t be bothered listening to any advice from friends or experts, and they insist on doing things their way. Effective entrepreneurs are always open to learning, no matter what their prior experience.

Seek out established suppliers and channels. The challenge of a creating a new product or service is tough enough, without insisting on a new supply chain, and a new distribution channel. The most effective startups focus on their core competency, and work hard to pick the best of the rest for partners.

Pays close attention to new potential competitors. Effective startups are never comfortable just because the features they plan for rollout in six months are ahead of what competitors have now. Things move fast in the startup world, and real competitors never stand still. Reassess new entrants and competitors every month.

Spend more time on initial positioning. Like the old saying, you only get one chance for a great first impression. Overcoming a bad image, or even changing a non-image, takes lots to time, money, and effort. Your initial business identity can make or break your startup.

Do your homework on minimal capital requirements. Usually that means have a Plan B and Plan C, just in case your initial source doesn’t materialize, or takes much longer to finalize that you expected. Running out of capital in midstream is a brick wall that can derail even the best plans.

Offer customized products or services. It’s very difficult for a startup to jump quickly to the volume required to sustain them as the low-cost producer. Big gorillas with deep pockets find it hard to scale products that are designed or produced to order.

Choose a large market in a growth industry. By definition, a growth industry has a history and an outlook of at least double-digit annual growth. A large market means at least $500 million in potential sales if the company is asset-light, and $1 billion if it requires plenty of property, plants and equipment.

What is “Single Shot Cinema”?

“Single Shot Cinema” is a way of filming which enables you to shoot a scene in one single shot, using all the different camera angles which express your personal perception of the scene.

In practice this means you will move the camera in a steady and flexible, yet constant movement, from one angle to another. Using camera movements both fast and slow, high and low, close by and far away, all in one single shot within one scene.

Doing so, the movement of the camera itself becomes the major way of cinematographic expression.

Both the philosophy behind “Single Shot Cinema” and the practical consequences in filming have been developed by Leonard Retel Helmrich. He based “Single Shot Cinema” partly on the ideas of the film theorist André Bazin.

State Dept: Chen Has Fellowship at US University

(Newser) – It appears a face-saving solution has been found for the Chen Guangcheng diplomatic standoff. China earlier said the blind activist, currently in a Beijing hospital, is permitted to study abroad, and the US State Department this morning announced that Chen has a fellowship at a US university. "As a Chinese citizen, if he wants to study abroad he can go through the normal channels to the relevant departments and complete the formalities in accordance with the law like other Chinese citizens," China's foreign ministry had said in a statement. Though rights groups expressed worries that authorities could easily hold up paperwork indefinitely to stop Chen from ever leaving the country, the State Department says it expects China to quickly handle the travel procedures for him.
A rep added that the agreement included allowing Chen's wife and two children to also leave so he can accept the fellowship, the AP reports. Before the foreign ministry statement, Chen told Reuters he was concerned for his safety and that of his family. "My situation here is not very good," he said. "I've just found out that when friends have come to visit me, they've been beaten up." One of China's main official newspapers called Chen "a tool and a pawn for American politicians to blacken China," and called US Ambassador Gary Locke a "Starbucks-drinking troublemaker" in an editorial.
