In 1997 I asked my boss to consider allowing me to telecommute on a part-time basis. My proposal went down in flames. Although the company already had field-based people who telecommuted full-time, and my boss herself worked from home on a regular basis, the prevailing mindset was work was someplace you went, not something you did.

Fast forward a few years to the early-2000’s and I’m supervising team members who worked remotely full-time. The exodus continued for a few years and by the mid-2000’s nearly half my team worked virtually. Nearly 20 years after I submitted my telecommuting proposal the world has become a smaller place. My organization has offices in Canada, the U.K., Singapore, and scores of colleagues work out of home offices around the globe.

As the director of People Analytics at Google for the last decade, Brian Welle’s world revolves around data. He has found that those hard, cold numbers can, when used properly, uncover the key attributes that make people better managers and team members. Once identified, the attributes can then be cultivated and instilled to boost performance. Welle spoke recently with Cade Massey, Wharton practice professor of operations, information and decisions and co-director of the Wharton People Analytics Initiative, about applying data analytics in the office. Massey is co-host of the Wharton Moneyball show on Wharton Business Radio on SiriusXM channel 111, and this interview was part of a special broadcast on SiriusXM for the Wharton People Analytics Conference.

Welle identified eight attributes that define a top-performing manager: a good coach; empowers the team and does not micromanage; expresses interest in and concern for team members’ success and personal well-being; productive and results-oriented; good communicator — listens and shares information; helps with career development; has a clear vision and strategy for the team; and possesses key technical skills that help him or her advise the team.

Si tu primera juventud transcurrió en los 70 o los 80, sabes muy bien que "los tiempos están cambiando" y sabes que es posible que con el tiempo Facebook se convierta en el "vinilo" de las redes sociales, un rincón para que los "senior" reencuentren a sus compañeros de colegio, de facultad, de "mili"... de camino.

No quiero repetirme. Hoy no hablaré de la discriminación por edad o de la estupidez de apartar de la vida laboral a profesionales expertos de más de 50.
Hoy quiero hablar al oído de mis compañeros de generación, alejándome de las comparaciones con otras generaciones tan de moda (yo que soy millenial por vocación y babyboomer por la fecha de nacimiento), o metiendo en el mismo saco a todos mis congéneres... Porque está visto que a medida que pasa el tiempo más te singularizas, cada cual con su historia, sus vivencias, sus temores, sus experiencias, sus éxitos y fracasos... aprendizajes únicos que nos conforman como seres irrepetibles.
