Healing Practice: Laughter Really is Serious Medicine

Healing Practice: Laughter Really is Serious Medicine | Making a difference | Scoop.it

Laughter is a universal language that brings people together. Shared laughter breaks down barriers, builds trust, and creates connection. Laughter has the power to de-escalate conflict and bring about creative and flexible solutions to challenges. When we laugh, dopamine is released and opens up pathways in the brain that help us discover novel solutions. According to Ellen Weber and Jeane Segal, “humor and playful communication strengthen our relationships by triggering positive feelings and fostering emotional connection.

Empathy and Self-Compassion: Be Good to Yourself When Nobody Else Will

Empathy and Self-Compassion: Be Good to Yourself When Nobody Else Will | Making a difference | Scoop.it
Usually confused with compassion, empathy is the feeling that you understand and share another person's experiences and emotions, or more simply stated, it is the ability to share someone else's feelings. Whereas compassion might lean more toward action to alleviate someone's pain (like sending food when someone gets sick), empathy means you make attempts to understand a person's perspectives, decisions, and motivations for their actions.

Empathy has been called a vicarious experience—if your friend is feeling betrayed, you too will experience a feeling of betrayal in your body; if they are elated, you too will feel happy. Feeling empathy is to tune into another person's emotions.

(Teaching Empathy) Children learn empathy growing up, but can we train adults to have more of it?

(Teaching Empathy) Children learn empathy growing up, but can we train adults to have more of it? | Making a difference | Scoop.it
Empathy is an interpersonal skill that can be viewed as part of emotional intelligence. Psychotherapist Carl Rogers wrote that empathy could enhance relationships and recommended it for ordinary people and therapists.

Studies support its value. Health professionals who show high levels of empathy tend to get better adherence to treatment from their patients and better patient outcomes. And beyond health care, empathy is associated with better personal relationships and more successful social behaviour.

What's the difference between empathy and sympathy and why is it important?

What's the difference between empathy and sympathy and why is it important? | Making a difference | Scoop.it

Today is the first ever Empathy Day, which aims to use words and stories to build children’s empathy.

It’s common to mistake empathy with sympathy, so what’s the difference between the two?  Both words deal with the relationship someone has to the feelings and experiences of another.

The two terms have roots in the Greek term pathos, which means ‘suffering, feeling’.  Sympathy is a word that entered English in the mid 1500s, and had a broad meaning of ‘agreement or harmony in qualities between things or people’.

Since then, the term has come to be used in a more specific way – and the word now conveys feeling pity or feelings for someone who is experiencing misfortune.
