Great article about the variety of ways Makerspaces can take up residence in your library!

Dr. Laura Sheneman's curator insight, May 6, 2015 9:42 AM

Love this quote, "Educators are now focusing on how the maker movement can be truly meaningful: it’s not about where making is happening, but about how creating, experimenting, and collaborating impact education. In addition, some high schoolers tinkering their free periods away can discover a passion—sometimes leading to a future educational focus or even scholarship money."

4 Of The Fastest Growing Trends In Education Technology

4 Of The Fastest Growing Trends In Education Technology | Maker Movement | Scoop.it

Technology has had a transformative impact on the education system worldwide, comprehensively impacting how students learn, share and gather information.

The adoption of technologies like mobile apps, cloud computing and game-based learning has helped students be more productive. From being consumers, students are now becoming creators and innovators, thanks to technology’s ubiquity. As K-12 schools and universities continue to adopt new technology for learning.

Richard Byrne provides a number of links to websites that have great hands-on activities for students to learn science. The sites include:

* Science is Fun - 25 chemistry experiments geared to students in grades 4 - 9

* Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago has activities in twelve topics. You will find experiments for students preK through grade 12.

* Discover the World is from NOAA. A total of 43 experiments which are probably best for grades 4 - 8.

* Squishy Circuits. Learn how to create the "dough" to create these circuits and watch a TedEd to learn more.

There are many ideas to be found in this post and lots of fun for your students to experience while they explore and learn science!

Beyond Minecraft: Games That Inspire Building and Exploration

Beyond Minecraft: Games That Inspire Building and Exploration | Maker Movement | Scoop.it

"The success and popularity of Minecraft in and out of classrooms is no surprise. It’s one of the best examples of the potential of learning with games because it embraces exploration, discovery, creation, collaboration, and problem-solving while allowing teachers to shepherd play toward any subject area."

Check out a selection of games that will help students explore, create, collaborate and more. The six games discussed are:

* Garry's Mod - learn physics as you play

* Kerbal Space Program - another physics game

* Sound Shapes - designed for PlayStation this is a "puzzle game set to a rich musical soundscape"

* DIY - Find instructions to build a wide variety of items and a community that will support you

* STENCYL - learn to program using "blocks of code" that you may snap together and create games that may be played on a variety of platforms

* CodeAcademy - learn a variety of programming language for free

Do you think students should learn to code? If you do then some of these games will provide them with this skill as well as others that we know are part of gaming. You may want to try some of these with your students.

The Maker Movement: A Learning Revolution

Via Karen Bonanno
more...
Karen Bonanno's curator insight, April 21, 2014 4:36 PM

The key to the explosion of the maker movement is accessibility. We have arrived at a point in time when ingenious new inventions are affordable and often free. Anyone can easily find and share tools, instructions, and ideas online, where a vibrant community of hundreds of thousands of global problem-solvers congregates—when they’re not collaborating face to face.

In 2013, there were more than 100 Maker Faires—“the greatest show-and-tells on earth”—and Mini Maker Faires across the globe. At last year’s Maker Faire in San Mateo, California, more than 150,000 children and adults gathered over a weekend to make things, show off, challenge one another, laugh, play, invent, tinker, solve problems, and inspire.
