EU: Evaluating the impacts of GM crops in the EU: AMIGA project is launched!

AMIGA «Assessing and Monitoring the Impacts of Genetically modified plants on Agro-ecosystems» is a newly started EU project, funded by the FP7, aiming at producing scientific data related to the possible environmental and economic impacts of cultivation of GMPs, relevant to European environments. Launched on the 1st of December 2011, AMIGA project will run for 4 years, until the end of 2015

GOVERNMENT is losing about US$4 million annually in maize wastage due to lack of storage facilities in the country, Secretary to the Cabinet Roland Msiska has said. Dr Msiska said the country is this year expecting a bumper harvest, hence the need to think ahead by building more storage facilities to avoid any more maize wastage.

The most preferred crop one season and out of favour the next, maize will alternate between extremes in Punjab’s selective policymaking. The diversifying state gives maize the largest area shifting away from paddy, around 35 per cent of 12 lakh hectares, which would take the total area under the crop from 1.29 lakh hectares until 2012 to 5.5 lakh hectares once the diversification is complete.
