Gallup poll concludes: Social media has little influence on most shopper decisions

Gallup poll concludes: Social media has little influence on most shopper decisions | #MaIN - Marketing Innovation | Scoop.it
After years of chasing Facebook fans and Twitter followers, many companies now stress quality over quantity in their social-media strategies. They are tracking mentions of their brand, then using the information to help the business.
Simone Favaro's insight:

Do social media influence consumer behavior and shopper decision? According to Gallup they don't. Just 5% declares they have "a great deal of influence" and 30% affirms they have "some influence".

It's interesting to see that 94% of respondents tell that they use Social Media to "Connect with friends and family", the 29% to follow trends/find product reviews and information, the 20% to write reviews of products.

So, Is it the end of the marketing myth?

Social media is even more important to "hyper growth" companies, or those that self-reported "significant" year over year revenue growth. Of the hyper growth companies surveyed (about 16% of the entire group), 91% said social media helped "increase awareness" of their brand, while 82% said it helped them generate "new leads." Simone Favaro's insight:

[Social Networks Sites] see people as data, breaking their users down into categories that fit neatly into a machine-readable stream of information. This data is gathered not only from what users share on the social networks themselves but also through programs that plug into these networks by way of an application programming interface, better known as an A.P.I. For instance, think of any time you signed in to a Web site or an application with your Facebook or Twitter login, used a Facebook or Twitter app that was made by a third-party company like Zynga, or clicked a Like button at the top of an article. In different ways, those applications all talk to Facebook or Instagram social networks via their A.P.I.s.
