Why Isn’t ‘Servant Leadership’ More Prevalent? — HBS Working Knowledge

Why Isn’t ‘Servant Leadership’ More Prevalent? — HBS Working Knowledge | Magement | Scoop.it
Summing Up: After plowing through an unusually full inbox of reader e-mails, Jim Heskett wonders whether the term servant leadership is an oxymoron?
Brenda J. Alegria's insight:

Servant leadership is where the leader's primary role is to serve others, especially employees. I felt like it was relevant in that this type of leadership can be associated with invert pyramid organization that we have discussed in class in which top management "reports" upward to lower levels of management.  At first when I read the title of the article I was skeptical in that it was such an odd name that I thought it was a negative type of leadership but then realized it was not and that servant leadership does not relate to hierarchy management but is motivational and empowering type of leadership where the leader does not tell employees what to do, but rather works with them and also is not afraid to get dirty and help out.  This type of leader feels the most satisfied at the end of the day and are more productive as well.
