Londonderry Inventioneers strike a deal during Shark Tank appearance | Made Different | Scoop.it

LONDONDERRY - When the ABC television show "Shark Tank" premiered in summer 2009, six teenage engineers were watching and dreaming from their Londonderry living rooms.

"We'd often joke about it, about what we'd do if we got a chance to be on the show," said Tristan "T.J." Evarts, 17, one of the founding members of the Inventioneers. The group is a FIRST Lego League team whose award-winning invention, the SMART Wheel, is due to go into production later this year.

Sustainability Starts With A Mindset > ENGINEERING.com | Made Different | Scoop.it

Ask ten people “what does sustainability mean to you” and you’ll get ten different answers.  There will be common threads throughout the responses, likely the first things that come to mind like “green”, “renewable”, “LEED”, or “the capacity to endure”.  However, the deeper meaning of sustainability is likely to be missed unless one has been exposed to the building body of knowledge surrounding the theme of sustainability, or it’s close partner resiliency.  Sustainability starts with a mindset, one that begins with the end in mind.

A glimpse of the Maker Movement - Manufacturing Innovation Blog | Made Different | Scoop.it

Imagine if you had had the chance to be in room in the mid-70’s attending presentations from the likes of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs?  I believe that maybe 20 years from now, I will think back and recall when I sat at the US Patent and Trademark Office auditorium and listened to additive manufacturing machine makers 3D Systems, Stratasys, MakerBot, Ex One, and EOS, and innovative companies such as Shapeways share the creative ways they were making new products that had never been imagined before.

Global Information Technology Report 2013

Global Information Technology Report 2013 | Made Different | Scoop.it

The Global Information Technology Report 2013, the 12th in the series, analyses the impact and influence of ICTs on economic growth and jobs in a hyperconnected world. Read the full news release for more information.
At the core of the report, the Networked Readiness Index (NRI) measures the preparedness of an economy to use ICT to boost competitiveness and well-being.
The report highlights the lack of progress in bridging the new digital divide – not only in terms of developing ICT infrastructure but also in economic and social impact. Despite rapid adoption of mobile telephony, most developing economies lag behind advanced economies due to environments that are insufficiently conducive to innovation and competitiveness. On the other hand, the report shows the progress that countries are making to fully use ICT to boost higher productivity, economic growth and quality jobs in the current economic environment. Finally, the report reveals an apparent investment threshold in ICT, skills and innovation beyond which return on investment increases significantly.

Jake Sieben's curator insight, March 22, 2013 5:55 AM

This article discribes how the current attitude towards 3D printing is simular to the way people though about computers in the early 90's. Bulky and expensive. If 3D printing follows that trend then we could see the 3D printer as a home appliance in the near future.
