8 Things Kids should Be Able to Do with Technology ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Madares Al Ghad Education Technology | Scoop.it

I just came across this graphic on Twitter and it straightforward picked my interest. I was contemplating the deep meaning it communicates and could not agree more. The message is clear: technology is a means and not an end.

Teachers are still operating within the substitution level in that they are using new technology tools to replace old ones, for instance, using Google Docs to replace Microsoft Word. the task ( writing) is the same but the tools are different.

How Visual Thinking Improves Writing

How Visual Thinking Improves Writing | Madares Al Ghad Education Technology | Scoop.it

Encouraging kids to think in pictures and words can free up their creativity and language skills as they write.

Daniel Stebbins's insight:

Younger kids typically love to draw and aren’t too worried about the outcomes of their artwork — until they get older. By the time they’ve learned to read and write, art takes a back burner to academics, primarily because of what most schools prioritize. Over time it becomes harder for kids to think in pictures the way they once did. But what if students were encouraged to think in pictures alongside words?

A New Fantastic Bloom's Taxonomy Wheel for iPad Apps ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

A New Fantastic Bloom's Taxonomy Wheel for iPad Apps ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Madares Al Ghad Education Technology | Scoop.it

"Today while I was browsing through my Twitter feeds I came across this fabulous Bloom's Taxonomy wheel of apps shared by Anthony. If you still recall, some previous versions of this wheel have already been featured here in Bloom's Taxonomy for Teachers section .

As you can see, the wheel outlines a wide variety of verbs and activities related to each thinking level of Blooms taxonomy coupled with iPad apps that go with it. These apps are supposed to help teachers and students better cultivate these different thinking levels in their use of iPad apps. And because the the visual is not hyperlinked, I went ahead and provided the links for each of these apps in the lists below. Enjoy"

This could be useful resource to connect the old Bloom's taxonomy to new resources out there on the iPad. And a nice visual to boot.

Create Great Diagrams Using Cacoo & Google Drive | Madares Al Ghad Education Technology | Scoop.it

What do you use when you need to draw a diagram? Do you do the whole thing from scratch? Do you create each and every box with a series of four lines, or do you use a program that creates the box for you?

Daniel Stebbins's insight:

Cacoo is a mind mapping application that has been around for a while and now you can enjoy its services through Google Drive. Add the app to your GD (read the instructions how to do it) and start creating mind maps right in your Google Drive. The basic account is free and in my opinion it is sufficient for educational purposes. You can make 25 sheets of diagrams. Free account lets you export your diagrams as PNG images.

Easily Create Classroom Posters on iPad Using Pic Collage App ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

Easily Create Classroom Posters on iPad Using Pic Collage App ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Madares Al Ghad Education Technology | Scoop.it

Somebody has recently asked me for  a review of an app that can allow students to easily create posters on iPad. Pic Collage is the best option I recommend. With Pic collage you can take a bunch of picture and make one picture of it.

Using Pic Collage you can combine your photos in different ways . Scatter photos onto the background of your choosing or create a grid of your photos. Take the best parts of two photos to make one great one. Create a panorama or a mosaic out of multiple photos. If a picture speaks a thousand words, you can tell a whole story in a single frame with this app

Daniel Stebbins's insight:

Everyone loves a collage and this is a simple robust app that does what it promises...

Placing Literature maps book scenes in the real world

Placing Literature maps book scenes in the real world | Madares Al Ghad Education Technology | Scoop.it

Go behind the scenes of a new site based in Google Maps that combines geography, technology, and literature into a crowdsourced map of real locations from novels.

Daniel Stebbins's insight:

This article reviews a great new site, Placing Literature.  Much like Google Lit Trips, this site's goal is to make geography come alive in literature.  Given that this site is still in its infancy, there are few novels and places in the system, but I don't see that as a drawback.  I see this as a fantastic platform for a student project where they could make a significant online contribution.

UNESCO: Innovative Teaching and Learning (ITL) research: A global look at pedagogies for 21st century skills

UNESCO: Innovative Teaching and Learning (ITL) research: A global look at pedagogies for 21st century skills | Madares Al Ghad Education Technology | Scoop.it

Disconnects between policy mandates/supports and desired practice were found in most of the schools and all of the systems in our sample. For example, teachers were often being asked to innovate while being incented and judged solely by measures of the facts that students had acquired through traditional means, or given ICT to use without related curricular materials and models for ways to use it powerfully and effectively in subject matter learning. It was rare that teachers experienced standards, curriculum, professional development, assessments, and incentives that all aligned to support the development of students’ 21st century skills.

Daniel Stebbins's insight:

The research was carried out in a uniquely diverse set of seven countries:  Australia, Indonesia, Russia, Finland, Senegal, England, and Mexico.
