Designing for Emergence: The Role of the Instructor in Student-Centered Learning - Hybrid Pedagogy

Designing for Emergence: The Role of the Instructor in Student-Centered Learning - Hybrid Pedagogy | Madares Al Ghad Education Technology | Scoop.it

We seem to talk about the instructor role so rarely that he/she becomes not only intangible, but at times invisible. Part of the problem seems to be that we’ve conflated instructor role with “authority,” and we’ve regarded authority as a dirty word.

Daniel Stebbins's insight:

I believe in student-centered learning, and I believe there is huge potential for this kind of learning to occur in online environments. But the instructor is a key element of that learning, and we need to talk more explicitly about what their role is and the specific ways they negotiates and leverages their authority, guidance, and presence to design learning environments in which emergence is possible.

Voki

Voki | Madares Al Ghad Education Technology | Scoop.it

A Voki is a talking voice character, a computer-generated version of oneself. The more generic term for a Voki is a speaking avatar, a digital representation of a person or being. Educators are discovering some of the unique roles these speaking avatars can play in language teaching particularly in the 21st century classroom.

For teachers these speaking avatars can add a more "human" element to the online class website or blog. It is especially useful for those of us who may not be all that great with video taping or vodcasting. Teachers can use a voki avatar to introduce the lesson or topics. It can also be used to aid in instructing those who are more audio/visual learners.

Daniel Stebbins's insight:

This is another simple but effective Web 2.0 tool we have implemented.   Students love using Voki and as a result have created some very unique and creative characters.  Students can then publish them on the internet or Embed them into Edmodo.  This is an excellent way to have students record their speaking assignments and homework as the Voki can be used both with a computer generated voice (listening, writing) or the creators voice (reading, speaking).

Twitter: Best Practices For Educators #ReinventingWriting - Edudemic | Madares Al Ghad Education Technology | Scoop.it

Twitter is an incredible tool for any classroom,if you know how to use it. Teachers like Karen Lirenman and Kathy Cassidy show us how even very young children benefit greatly from the safe online connections through their teachers.  If you’re still not convinced read the 100 Ways to Use Twitter in the Classroom.

Daniel Stebbins's insight:

I find that with twitter you either love it or you hate or you do not understand how to best use it.  Twitter is a very personal animal and no matter how many of the Edudemic articles and blogs you read the only way to find your footing in Twitter is to use it for 15 minutes a day for a month and reevaluate your stand on twitter through reflection at the end of your trial period.

Instructional Design Models and Methods | Instructional Design Central

Instructional Design Models and Methods | Instructional Design Central | Madares Al Ghad Education Technology | Scoop.it

Information about instructional design models and instructional methods for online course design and design for instruction.

Daniel Stebbins's insight:

"Models, like myths and metaphors, help us to make sense of our world. Whether derived from whim or from serious research, a model offers its user a means of comprehending an otherwise incomprehensible problem. An instructional design model gives structure and meaning to an I.D. problem, enabling the would-be designer to negotiate her design task with a semblance of conscious understanding. Models help us to visualize the problem, to break it down into discrete, manageable units. The value of a specific model is determined within the context of use. Like any other instrument, a model assumes a specific intention of its user. A model should be judged by how it mediates the designer's intention, how well it can share a work load, and how effectively it shifts focus away from itself toward the object of the design activity." -Martin Ryder, University of Colorado. - See more at: http://www.instructionaldesigncentral.com/htm/IDC_instructionaldesignmodels.htm#sthash.UxA0n2EZ.dpuf
