The popularity of animated video within a digital marketing strategy is growing, and whilst it was once limited to those with massive production budgets, improvements in technology mean it is now widely accessible. Studies have proven that online video is a vital part of your marketing strategy (web visitors are 64%- 85% more likely to purchase after watching a product video, and you are 53 times more likely to appear on the first page of Google if you are using video on your site Forrester, 1/2010) – but with the wealth of video options out there, which is best for your business?

The University of Western Australia in Second Life: MachinimUWA ...

The Costa Rica-German connection with Karima Hoisan and Natascha Randt are back with a machinima born from a rhythmic poem by Dale Innis. "Reflect on This: Dactyls are Dharma, Too"  is the sublime result.
This machinima is now part of the L$1.1 Million, MachinimUWA VI: REFLECTIONS, the 6th UWA Short Animated Film Challenge. The theme for MachinimUWA VI is a tribute to the Centenary of the University of Western Australia. Entries for MachinimUWA VI: REFLECTIONS may consist of any storyline that fits the theme of 'REFLECTIONS.' At least ONE of the 3 'Spaces of Reflection' on UWA's SL SIMS (the Sunken Gardens, the Somerville Auditorium or the Reflection Pond) must be clearly shown in the story.

What type of content does Machinima Prime look for when developing scripted web shows?

Primarily our focus is to find great stories derived from known global franchises across gaming, movies and TV that can serve as tent pole episodic series and then build the programming schedule around them.

W3C proceeds with Web video encryption despite opposition

W3C proceeds with Web video encryption despite opposition | The Machinimatographer | Scoop.it

The Web standards group is going ahead with its Encrypted Media Extensions technology despite some opposition, arguing it's a step in the right direction.

The World Wide Web Consortium has decided to go ahead with a technology that will let companies like Netflix stream encrypted video using Web sites -- against the wishes of the Free Software Foundation, Electronic Frontier Foundation, and 25,600 petition signatories.

The Web standards group announced the move Thursday, to nobody's surprise. Entertainment-industry players had approached the group three years ago to discuss the technology, Microsoft has been helping develop it, and Google already has built the specification, called Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) into Chrome.

The standard doesn't actually handle encryption and digital rights management (DRM) to govern who gets to see or copy video. Instead, it provides a standard mechanism that lets a browser call upon a plug-in that handles the work. In other words, it enables encryption but doesn't do the encryption itself.

Google's VP9 video codec nearly done; YouTube will use it

Google's VP9 video codec nearly done; YouTube will use it | The Machinimatographer | Scoop.it

One of the biggest video sites on the Net will use Google's next-generation video compression technology after it's fully defined on June 17.

The VP9 bitstream definition, which describes how video is compressed into a stream of data so it can be transmitted efficiently over a network, has been in beta testing for a week, said Matt Frost, senior business product manager for the WebM Project.

Paul Wilkins, a Google codec engineer, detailed the final schedule for the VP9 bitstream definition Thursday in a mailing list post.

WebM will be updated to accommodate the new video codec and a new audio codec called Opus, too, said another Google employee, Lou Quillio.

Dorothea Martin's curator insight, May 20, 3:30 AM

Absolute Leseempfehlung!

Das Phänomen des "Binge-watching"s (Komakucken?!) und "Hyperserien"

“I’ve always said that I don’t see my show as serialized so much as hyperserialized,” explains Vince Gilligan, creator of AMC’s Breaking Bad. “That is something that, honestly, I wouldn’t have been allowed to do 10 or 15 years ago.”

"And that’s ultimately the biggest difference between the Hyperserials and the legendary shows that spawned them: a purer, more intense focus on one linear, series-long plotline. Hyperserials tend to do away with recaps, teasers, and exposition of any kind. They make even less sense when viewed out of order"

Rogério Rocha's curator insight, May 20, 7:23 AM

IN A certain sense, all television is addictive. This should be pretty obvious, given that Americans watch more than five hours a day, on average. At that rate, a person who lives to the age of 80 will spend 21 percent of his or her adult life—the equivalent of 4,175 days, or nearly 13 years—in front of the tube.

Technology doesn’t change what a story is, but technologies and platforms do change audience experience and the process by which writers develop ideas. The Open-Source Cross-Platform Video Editor: Shotcut

Dean Mantz's curator insight, May 7, 11:02 AM

Ever since I came across Robin's Scoop.it site I have found some top knotch resources.  When educators are looking to integrate video projects into their curriculum, one must consider what time may be needed outside of class to complete the work.  Well, here is one video option that works on multiple platforms.  Thus, enabling students to work on projects at home as well as school.

173 Sud's curator insight, May 7, 11:12 AM

MakeUseOf :: Adobe Premiere. Final Cut Pro. Sony Vegas. AVID. All of these are high-end video editors that all have one attribute in common: they cost money. In an ideal world, there would be an equally high-end freeware video editing system out there. Unfortunately, most of the “editors” that do make these claims are embarrassingly poor and of little to no use.

However,  Shotcut may be a shining star in the world of free video editors. It’s an open-source, cross-platform editing system that is incredibly intricate, and it’s loaded with an arsenal of features so hot that they will melt your face off. More appropriately, Shotcut is a freeware video toolkit that is actually useful and won’t hold you back.

Shotcut offers basic cutting and trimming capabilities along with a zillion different codecs available for export. For the record, these are professional-level file formats, and you could even use Shotcut as a higher-end file converter from time to time, if needed. Also included is the ability to perform basic color correction with a three-wheel user interface, an eyedropper tool for post-production white balancing, and a few filters to choose from.

On the input side of things, Shotcut can receive footage via SDI, HDMI, and more. Timecode is supported, and the app will typically allow for native editing. Simply put, Shotcut is a fantastic piece of software to keep in your editing suite. I wouldn’t recommend it as your go-to editor, but it definitely has a place in the video production world.

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, May 12, 12:13 PM

To install, simply extract the archive and run it. You can drag the Shotcut folder (app icon for OS X) to copy and move it wherever you want.
