Desktop printing at the NANO level | Machines Like Us

Desktop printing at the NANO level | Machines Like Us | Machines Pensantes | Scoop.it
A new low-cost, high-resolution tool is primed to revolutionize how nanotechnology is produced from the desktop, according to a new study by Northwestern University researchers.

Currently, most nanofabrication is done in multibillion-dollar centralized facilities called foundries. This is similar to printing documents in centralized printing shops. Consider, however, how the desktop printer revolutionized the transfer of information by allowing individuals to inexpensively print documents as needed. This paradigm shift is why there has been community-wide ambition in the field of nanoscience to create a desktop nanofabrication tool.

"With this breakthrough, we can construct very high-quality materials and devices, such as processing semiconductors over large areas, and we can do it with an instrument slightly larger than a printer," said Chad A. Mirkin, senior author of the study and a world-renowned pioneer in the field of nanoscience.

Mirkin is the George B. Rathmann Professor of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and a professor of medicine, chemical and biological engineering, biomedical engineering and materials science and engineering. He also is the director of Northwestern's International Institute for Nanotechnology.

The study will be published July 19 in the journal Nature Communications.

[Slideshare] The SEMANTIC condition: Connectivism and Open Learning

In this talk I talk about the four major conditions, and four major design parameters, of massive open online courses - diversity, autonomy, openness and interactivity. In particular, I respond to a paper from Jenny Mackness, Roy Williams and Sui Fai John Mak called The Ideas and Reality of Participating in a MOOC. True, the paper is three years old, but I've always felt it deserved a considered response, and it provided an excellent platform for this talk. SUMMER Video Game Series: Mirror’s Edge

SUMMER Video Game Series: Mirror’s Edge | Machines Pensantes | Scoop.it

A sequel to Mirror’s Edge (2008), a parkour action/adventure game, was recently announced at E3 2013.

You’re high above the bustling streets, effortlessly leaping from rooftop to rooftop, free and alone to go where you please. The urban cacophony is reduced to a quiet hum among the skyscraper’s abandoned airy heights.

It’s something we all think about at some point or another. Take any car commercial where you see yourself (the driver) zooming along an empty road, unencumbered by traffic or stoplights. It’s this desire for freedom that DICE’s 2008 video game “Mirror’s Edge” so viscerally taps into. The premise is simple: in a dystopian city you take on the role of Faith, a “runner” who must ferry messages across the rooftops. The city below is too intensely surveilled for illegal activities, so the roofs are the final frontier for outlaws and unsanctioned movement.

Curate, Organize and Visualize LARGE Data Collections with TreeMap | Machines Pensantes | Scoop.it

TreeMap provides an easy, yet extremely powerful means of creating beautiful treemaps for analytical and presentation purpose. Importing data from a wide variety of file formats (including of course Excel), as well as connecting to databases (such as MySQL and SQL Server) is a breeze... and it scales to big data.

The Art of Pi: A Colorful DATA Visualization

The Art of Pi: A Colorful DATA Visualization | Machines Pensantes | Scoop.it

Using Circos, a circular visualization software, Cristian Ilies Vasile and Martin Krzywinski created these vibrant representations of π, φ and e.

Cristian Ilies Vasile had the idea of connecting each digit of π to its successive digit with links to the position of the numerically corresponding segments. Martin Krzywinski added to Vasile’s visualization “by showing the transition probabilities for each digit across bins of 10 digits” and did this for φ and e as well for the first 1,000 digits, followed by the first 2,000 digits.

Next, Krzywinski created a lovely distribution plot of the numbers using red-yellow-blue Brewer palette to map their digits and plot them on an Archimedean spiral.

For more details of the project, check out Martin Krzywinski’s website.

But what about works at the other end of the artistic spectrum, like children's watercolors? Thanks to an invention from a 12 year-old, even young children can soon use robotics to make their own artwork. The WaterColorBot paints colorful pictures on paper based on existing graphics or follows along with users as they draw on a computer.

I think this is interesting.. and as we think about the whole integrated care delivery model, this data and information will play a critical part. Of those practices that Humana will own or be part of in a significant way, I believe we can make this happen. For those docs with small practices, we would need to find the right motivation to have them leverage this info. Do we offer it to them? such as ipads for usage during an office visit? we have to make it simple yet provide the best information so they could provide the best quality of care.
Scott Normandin's comment, May 16, 2014 10:24 PM
the question begs: is/are applications that make access to health care the domain of the younger generation, or as some would content, are applications an additional level of complication to our senior population. Personal experience from the lens of my parents is that "absent" a vetted and universally adopted application that supports a universal view for all, this may by perceived as the "new best new toy" and fade with time. Our seniors; albeit are digital immigrants, working their way into the development of new technologies clumsily, whereas Gen X/Y find the technology adaptable, available and importantly expendable when the next best thing comes available. What defines consumerization: speed of development and release, or the ability to support end users?
