SketchSynth lets anyone create their own control panels with just a marker and a piece of paper. Once drawn, the controller sends Open Sound Control (OSC) messages to anything that can receive them; in this case, a simple synthesizer running in Pure Data. It’s a fun toy that also demonstrates the possibilities of adding digital interaction to sketched or otherwise non-digital interfaces. Via Julien Vouilloux
All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree.” - Albert Einstein
The most tangible comparison is of the neural network of the brain and the intergalactic network of the cosmos. The human brain weighs about 3 pounds and fits between our ears, whereas the universe is, well, a lot bigger.
Yet despite this contrast in size, when both of these natural structures are mapped out as a series of connections, they look nearly identical (see picture above). You can take this even one step further: while the universe is infinitely larger than the brain, and the brain is infinitely larger than a cell, cells seem to produce the same pattern of complexity! Can anyone be a data journalist? Simon Rogers on what we can learn from a 1977 diagram...
Now is the time to examine this - in May 2010, we published this piece on how reporters would soon be flooded with a "tsunami of data". Two years on and data journalism is part of the fabric of what we, and many other news organisations do.
What is it? I would say data journalism is such a wide range now of styles - from visualisation to long form articles. The key thing they have in common is that they're based on numbers and statistics - and that they should aim to get a 'story' from that data. The ultimate display of that story, be it words or graphics, is irrelevant, I think - it's more about the process... Via Lauren Moss

In Farmland World, speed is a catalyst for reconfiguring the relationship between the city, the rural landscape and the animal/machine hybrids that cultivate land. Capitalizing on both recent investments in high-speed rail infrastructure and the plentiful subsidies for farming, the network of resorts combines crowd-sourced farm labor with eco-tainment. The project received a second runner-up in the Animal Architecture Awards.

Robin Good: Here's a great visualization of how different can be the traits of content re-use. In the left column you can see what would appear to be the ideal traits of a professional curator, while on the right you can immediately recognize the ones of scrapers, republishers, cheap aggregators and other "thin" publishers as Google would call them.
I think it can serve as an excellent reference, when in doubt about whether you are still doing the right thing or not, when it comes to re-using and republishing other people content.

This design uses only natural sunlight, sand and a large fresnel lens (like a magnifying glass only flat) to melt the sand into natural glass objects. Imagine the potential for housing displaced refugees by simply printing out whole houses using local materials and the sun - no VOCs, no complicated distribution and logistics. Of course, people who live in glass houses still need to be careful of stone throwers... Via Kalani Kirk Hausman, Growthobjects, Hassan Balti

The simulation assumption is ancient, though, and shows how integrated this transcendent view of virtual reality is with spiritual beliefs, especially Gnostic and Eastern religious beliefs. The Hindus called virtual reality, Maya, and believed that it, too, had internal, external, and transcendent qualities. Maya was a veil of consciousness between Brahman and Atman (dual aspects of the unitary godhead), as well as the projected external world. So, are current virtual reality technologies just tools to discover and transcend the programmed reality?
