Addressing Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs with Technology

Addressing Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs with Technology | M-learning in 9-12 education | Scoop.it

Technology is way too often given a bad rap by administrators and educators as a distraction or a hazard for students.  When technology is integrated intentionally with foresight and with intention of addressing specific growth-oriented goals, it increases the potential to help students learn, develop, and grow in unique ways.  It can be used to help address the needs as described by Maslow.

Scannable: Nueva y potente aplicación de Evernote

Scannable: Nueva y potente aplicación de Evernote | M-learning in 9-12 education | Scoop.it

| M-learning in 9-12 education | Scoop.it

50+ Tools for Differentiating Instruction Through Social Media - Edutopia

50+ Tools for Differentiating Instruction Through Social Media - Edutopia | M-learning in 9-12 education | Scoop.it
Imagine a world where resources were limited to what was found in the classroom or the school closet known as the "Curriculum Materials Room." Picture a world where students wrote letters with pen and paper to communicate with other students and adults outside of the building. Due to postage costs, the teacher either sent the letters in bulk or paid for stamps out of his or her own pocket. Can you recall a time when student interests like skateboarding or video were never used as part of learning curriculum because the tools needed were either too expensive or not yet conceptualized? Do you remember a time when non-traditional learners struggled, and absenteeism meant a high likelihood of students doing poorly in school, and possibly having to retake the course?

What exactly makes an app “essential” is open to interpretation. For pure productivity, you could consider the direction of Google Drive, Skype, Zoom Notes, iAnnotate–maybe a gradebook app, Class Dojo, etc.

But what if your classroom if is full of open-ended projects and you need to constantly communicate with students, parents, and the community? Google+, Google Hangouts, Remind, DIY, and maybe Trello?

6 Alternative Social Media Tools for Teaching and Learning -- Campus Technology

6 Alternative Social Media Tools for Teaching and Learning -- Campus Technology | M-learning in 9-12 education | Scoop.it

by Leila Meyer: Putting concepts in context. Sarah Smith-Robbins, director of learning technologies and a marketing instructor in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, thinks social media can help take learning out of the classroom. "I want students to see the concepts that we're talking about in class not just as things that are important when we're in class, but as things that are important in their lives," she said. "Because these tools live in their pockets and I can give them reasons to be on the lookout for content to curate for the course, it helps them think through the application of the concepts from class."

eLearning Instructional Design: How best you can engage your learners?

eLearning Instructional Design: How best you can engage your learners? | M-learning in 9-12 education | Scoop.it
As a student, I always wondered why I was more comfortable remembering a movie dialogue than the physics theorems in my textbooks. Now, as an instructional designer, I got an answer to my question – if we find something attractive and interesting, we take extra efforts to learn and remember it for a long time.

But, what goes into making your eLearning courses engaging? Well, you can create highly interesting and engaging eLearning courses by focusing on certain instructional design strategies. Let us see more.

The difference between differentiation and personalized learning

The difference between differentiation and personalized learning | M-learning in 9-12 education | Scoop.it

The difference between differentiation, personalized learning, and the individualization of learning sometimes seems like a matter of semantics, but that could be that terms are used interchangeably when they’re actually not the same.

The biggest difference really is the starting point. Personalized learning starts with the learner first, where differentiation and individualization take something designed for masses and attempt to adapt it for individuals–a monumental task to consistently do well.

This chart from Barbara Bray and Kathleen McClaskey clarifies some of the other differences.
