Kentucky a national leader in instituting Common Core math and reading lessons in classroom

Kentucky a national leader in instituting Common Core math and reading lessons in classroom | Math | Scoop.it

Two years after becoming the first state in the nation to implement the more rigorous academic standards, education officials in Kentucky say teachers have embraced the changes and are encouraging their peers in other states who have been hesitant to implement Common Core.

“Our teachers have been strong leaders,” Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday said. “They have worked collaboratively to share resources, assessment items and lesson plans.”

The goal is simple: ensuring that students are prepared for college and the workforce — areas where Kentucky has come up short in past years, according to the state’s college and business leaders.

I use this often in my math classroom now.  The most difficult task is to make sure that students understand the meaning behind it!

Amy Keathley's curator insight, February 16, 2014 9:41 PM

This is definitely the direction we need to go - many students have such a hard time connect the math they learn in class to the real world and this is a step in the right direction!

What is the Mathematics Assessment Project (MAP)?

The Mathematics Assessment Program (MAP) aims to bring to life the Common Core State Standards (CCSSM) in a way that will help teachers and their students turn their aspirations for achieving them into classroom realities. MAP is a collaboration between the University of California, Berkeley and the Shell Center team at the University of Nottingham, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The team works with the Silicon Valley Mathematics Initiative and school systems across the US and UK to develop improved assessment
