Flipping the Classroom

Flipping the Classroom | Lyseo.org (ICT in High School) | Scoop.it

Flipping the classroom is a “pedagogy-first” approach to teaching. In this approach in-class time is “re-purposed” for inquiry, application, and assessment in order to better meet the needs of the individual learners. Students gain control of the learning process through studying course material outside of class, using readings, pre-recorded video lectures (using technology such as Tegrity), or research assignments. During class time, instructors become facilitators of the learning process by helping students work through problems individually and in groups.  There are numerous ways to flip your class.  In fact “every teacher who has chosen to flip does so differently,” says flipping gurus Bergmann and Sams (2012).  The University of Texas at Austin, has a nice “Quick Start” guide to help you determine what kind of flip is best for your course.

Groupthink is a product of a lack of trust, but it is also a cultural phenomenon. Perhaps it is so ingrained in the way things are done that it is hard to shake free. Schools abound with groupthink as people focus on managing rather than leading. It will take courageous leaders and followers to step out of those shadows.

Tips for transforming Educational Technology through Professional Development and Training

Tips for transforming Educational Technology through Professional Development and Training | Lyseo.org (ICT in High School) | Scoop.it
If you hadn’t already noticed, education is in the midst of a turning point: Today’s learning environment looks nothing like it did five years ago, and there’s no doubt in my mind that it will look completely different in another five years.

Technology, of course, drives this ongoing transformation.

Expanding connectivity, the rise of one-to-one computing, new developments in personalized learning software and the adoption of hands-on classroom technologies provide students with new and exciting learning opportunities. Teachers benefit, too, as new innovations streamline their workloads, provide real-time insights into student performance and empower collaboration among educators — or at least that’s what we’d like to think.

In many cases, students and teachers miss out on some of these important advantages. In the race to stay up to date on all the latest and greatest technologies, some school and district administrators forget two very important pieces of the puzzle: professional development and training.
