Luxembourg: 23 December 1961: Official National Day Set | History | Europe | Luxembourg (Europe) |

Under Grand Duchess CHARLOTTE’s reign (1919-1964) Luxembourg celebrates its national holiday on the birthday of the monarch, January 23. Her son and heir apparent, Grand Duke JEAN, is born on January 5, 1921, which meant that the national holiday would have continued to be celebrated in winter, had the practice continued to celebrate the national holiday on the birthday of the ruling monarch. In order to establish the celebration as a fixed date, and in a month with clement weather, a grand-ducal decree, dated December 23, 1961, sets the date of the official celebration of the monarch's birthday to June 23, irrespective of his/her actual date of birth.
