The grand duchy’s capital is the 8th greenest European capital, a British price comparison site has said.

Luxembourg City placed in-between Oslo and Berlin in “Europe’s Greenest Capital Cities”, a ranking released earlier this month by Compare the Market.

The site ranked 25 European capitals on 10 factors, such as pollution, availability of cycle lanes, water quality and the use of public transport.

The City of Luxembourg provides free, public drinking water fountains. The fountains are cleaned and disinfected several times a week to guarantee they are safe for use.

In April 2017, the Ville de Luxembourg launched a call for tender for setting up and operating a self-service eBike system across the city; tollowing the analysis of the tenders submitted as well as the negotiations with the candidates, the new contract - to operate until 1 January 2028 - has been awarded to JCDecaux Luxembourg SA (the current Vel'oh operator), its offer being economically the most advantageous.

The new contract will be operational from 1 July 2018 and will include (in the first phase) 80 stations (up from the current 69) with 800 bicycles, all with electric assistance: Luxembourg city will be one of the first European cities to offer a network with 100% electric bicycles. Like the old (Vel'oh) system, the bicycles will be available 7 days a week and 24 hours a day.

The contract has been arranged to allow neighbouring municipalities to join the network and avail of its advantages - comfortable, flexible and ecological transport.

Luxembourg City will soon open a special footbridge suspended underneath the historic Pont Adolphe. Built mainly for bikes, it will also be accessible to pedestrians offering splendid views over the Pétrusse Valley.

"It is the first footbridge in the world that is suspended in this way under an existing bridge and under a historic bridge! It was a challenge to achieve this by respecting the historical character of Pont Adolphe and by giving it a very spectacular new element,” said François Bausch, Minister of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure.
