One day we developed (insert the product/solution and what are actually the 2-3 things we offer or not) … . Until finally (insert the end result for the customer/consumer compared to competition)

Can the Maker Movement Infiltrate Mainstream Classrooms? - Mind/Shift

Can the Maker Movement Infiltrate Mainstream Classrooms? - Mind/Shift | Lurk No Longer | Scoop.it
At the White House Maker Faire recently, where President Obama invited “makers” of all ages to display their creations, the  President investigated a robotic giraffe, a red weather balloon and shot a marshmallow cannon made by a student. With so much fanfare and media attention on the event, some educators are hopeful that the idea of tinkering as a way of learning might finally have made it back to the mainstream. But will the same philosophy of discovery and hands-on learning make it into classrooms?

“Most of the people that I know who got into science and technology benefited from a set of informal experiences before they had much formal training,” said Dale Dougherty, editor of Make Magazine and founder of Maker Faire on KQED’s Forum program. “And I mean, like building rockets in the backyard, tinkering, playing with things. And that created the interest and motivation to pursue science.”

That spirit of play and discovery of knowledge is missing from much of formal education, Dougherty said. Students not only have no experience with making or the tools needed to build things, they’re often at a tactile deficit. “Schools haven’t changed, but the students have,” Dougherty said. “They don’t come with these experiences.”

Caroline Tanner's curator insight, April 1, 3:04 AM

iNACOL Blended Learning Teacher Competency Framework - iNACOL | Lurk No Longer | Scoop.it

In recent years there has been a dramatic rise in interest and early adoption of blended learning to improve the educational experiences of students. A great amount of work has been done to codify approaches, with tools and resources emphasizing the structural components of new models, such as the configuration of physical learning space, use of time, distribution of staff, and applications of technology. While there is widespread recognition that great in person teaching remains essential within these structures, there has been less exploration of the human factors and effective practices that make them successful.

"Maker education, when planned around skills acquisition, can enhance social-emotional development.

Self-Awareness: Making in all its forms requires a full range of skills including cognitive, physical, and affective skills. Given this need for multiple and diverse skill set, effective and successful making comes from an accurate assessment of one’s strengths and limitations as well as having optimism and confidence that challenges can be overcome within the making process. Example questions related to self-awareness and making include:

     * What strategies am I using to increase my awareness of my emotions and how they influence my performance during the making-related tasks?

     * What are my strengths given this particular making task?

     * What are my limitations and how can I use my strengths to overcome them? ..."

Shannon Mersand: 12 Questions (and Answers) about Makerspaces! | Lurk No Longer | Scoop.it
What is needed to start a Makerspace in a classroom or school?

Passion - You need to have passion and a belief in the educational value of maker-style projects.

Space - This can be a whole room or only part of a room.

Supplies - Start small with simple craft materials. Often sending a message out to colleagues and the community asking for donations of materials works well.

Storage - Create a place to store materials when they are not in use and student projects as they are being worked on.

What’s More Effective: Gamification or Game-based Learning? | Lurk No Longer | Scoop.it
The world of learning and development is changing dramatically and at long last, learning managers are discovering where the real key to success lies. It’s not about robust reporting or compliance (although they’re also pretty important) – if you want your learning programme to deliver great results, you need to focus on the people taking the learning content – the learners themselves.

Learner engagement is everything. As more and more L&D professionals realise this, the appetite for solutions that encourage engagement has increased enormously. Enter our friends gamification and game-based learning! With so many priorities vying for your attention, you probably don’t want to spend weeks and months choosing between the two approaches. You want to know which one will work better and we’re only too happy to help you out!
