Unhangouts - A platform for unconferences | Lurk No Longer | Scoop.it

Dr. Helen Teague's insight:
Ana Cristina Pratas's insight:

"Unhangout is an open source platform for running large scale online un-conferences. We use Google Hangouts to create as many small sessions as needed, and help users find others with shared interests.

Think of it as a classroom with an infinite number of breakout sessions. Each event has a landing page, which we call the lobby. When participants arrive, they can see who else is there and chat with each other. The hosts can do a video welcome and introduction that gets streamed into the lobby. Participants then break out into smaller sessions (up to 10 people per session) for in-depth conversations, peer-to-peer learning, and collaboration on projects. UnHangouts are community-based learning instead of top-down information transfer."

Study questions effectiveness of online education for at-risk students

Study questions effectiveness of online education for at-risk students | Lurk No Longer | Scoop.it
New study finds students at most risk may be those least well served by learning outside the classroom.
Dr. Helen Teague's insight:
From article: "According to a new study from the Brookings Institution, students who are the least well prepared for traditional college also fare the worst in online courses. For top students, taking an online course didn’t definitively have a negative effect on a student’s grade point average. But for others -- especially lower-performing students -- taking online courses was associated with higher dropout rates and lower grades, both at the time the course was taken and in future semesters, when compared to students who took classes in person."

10 Characteristics of Successful Online Students

10 Characteristics of Successful Online Students | Lurk No Longer | Scoop.it

"Exposing students to online learning long before they reach college is practical. This point paints online learning as a life skill of sorts – something for kids to understand before entering the real world as adults, much like balancing a bank account or learning how to create a resume. Without a solid understanding of online learning before graduation, students are less prepared for what they will face academically following high school."

Design thinking as a strategy: How understanding innovation creates innovation

Design thinking as a strategy: How understanding innovation creates innovation | Lurk No Longer | Scoop.it
Business strategies – especially in the tradition sense – are rather pushy. If you have a product, your strategy is to explain why a customer should use it.

Design thinking as a strategy flips this. Instead of forcing a product on customers, instead, it sees things from the customer’s perspective. A design mindset is not problem-focused, it is solution focused and action-oriented towards creating a preferred future. Design Thinking draws upon logic, imagination, intuition, and systemic reasoning – exploring the possibilities of what could be. This train of thought creates desired outcomes benefiting the end user.

When design principles are applied to strategy and innovation the success rate for innovation dramatically improves.

En momentos en que en la Pcia. de Bs.As. se permite el uso de celulares... qué hacemos con ellos?

Yeison Ossa Trejos's curator insight, November 2, 2016 12:45 PM
From my point of view, personal devices such cell phones, tablets, ipads, among others, can be a huge risk if we allow students to use them in the classroom. However, it is also true that we as teachers should try to find useful ways to incorporate these potential resources into our lessons if we want to increase learner involvement and motivation while at the same time improving time management, teacher-student interaction, meaningful learning and real-time provision of feedback.

All these educational factors can be simultaneously addressed if teachers take some time to do a little research on the web to find out the countless activities that digital devices allow them to perform along with your students both in and outside the classroom.
Sebastián Vásquez's curator insight, December 4, 2016 6:07 PM
One of the most common expressions that I use to listen to nowadays is "put your cellphone away". Many teacher deal in their daily basis with students distracted by their phones and most of time they take desperate actions towards this situations which leads to a rough environment and affects the atmosphere of the classroom. In fact, one need we have in this current days is that of creating students perception towards the use of this devices which is not  a short way to walk but neither impossible. Providing the conditions and raising awareness about other possible uses into the classroom as well as raising curiosity to what is happening in the classroom will increase the possibilities of obtaining better behaviors in terms of technology. Our task then is to start thinking of strategies to implement since the very basis of the students academic life.
