Homeschool FL's curator insight, June 2, 2013 8:33 PM

Educational apps are popping up daily, but the question for parents is, how to know which ones are worth using, and which ones are not? Because let's face it, the app industry is out to make money, and many times app developers are very astute at making an app that "looks" educational, but in reality is just full of ads and sneaky ways of getting your children to buy something.

This article lists 46 different websites that review apps for teachers and students. This should help cut through the clutter and help pinpoint the useful from the fluff.

Unfortunately we find that what happens the most, especially in schools is that educators and administrators tend to shy away from this responsibility and limit their teaching to the way they have been taught, thus excluding all the elements that are now pronouncing us as digital citizens in a society.
Sieg Holle's curator insight, May 10, 2013 12:15 PM

In the digital world we are human beings -free of the  many artificial restrictions and other special interest agendas and use our free will to engage our ideas and actions. It is natural - people can chose who they want to communicate with  It is a positive MOOC of that will expand the world into a new age of freedom and abundance .

Coursera plans to bring MOOC courses to K-12 teachers. The will be partnering with "several schools of education and other institutions and museums, including schools of education at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Virginia, the American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Modern Art, to bring free professional development courses to teachers via the web."

Coursera is designed with a peer-grading approach. This would allow teachers to receive feedback from other teachers. The courses will be free but there will also be a Signature Track Option that would allow teachers to pay a small fee which will allow them to receive a certificate. The goal is for this to be recognized as continuing education credit.

EverSlide is a basic, but potentially very useful, hack built over the weekend at the TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2013 hackathon. As you might guess by the name, the service turns your Evernote notes into slideshow presentations. And it’s crazy simple to use, too. The first line of text in your Evernote note becomes the slide’s title, the second line becomes the slide’s content, and to create a second slide, you just insert a horizontal line from Evernote’s editing menu at the top. Then, boom, instant slideshow!

Getting Kids Engaged with Primary Sources | Cool Tools

Getting Kids Engaged with Primary Sources | Cool Tools | Lund's K-12 Technology Integration | Scoop.it

The U.S. National Archives Experience Digital Vaults (pictured above) offers students a good introduction to discovering and working with primary source materials. Rather than turning kids loose on millions of records in the National Archives, Digital Vaults focuses on a curated collection of 1,200 items.

Within the site, there are activities designed to help students discover important connections between primary sources. One section, Pathways Challenges, provides quizzes that ask kids to analyze a specific resource and then find the related document within the collection. Teachers and students can create their own quizzes or take advantage of the premade challenges.

Students who create free Digital Vaults accounts can collect primary source documents and images and use them to create digital posters and videos within the available templates.
