Beth Dichter's curator insight, May 1, 2013 10:03 PM

Coursera plans to bring MOOC courses to K-12 teachers. The will be partnering with "several schools of education and other institutions and museums, including schools of education at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Virginia, the American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Modern Art, to bring free professional development courses to teachers via the web."

Coursera is designed with a peer-grading approach. This would allow teachers to receive feedback from other teachers. The courses will be free but there will also be a Signature Track Option that would allow teachers to pay a small fee which will allow them to receive a certificate. The goal is for this to be recognized as continuing education credit.

Thinglink is a Great “Pre-Teaching” Tool | Lund's K-12 Technology Integration | Scoop.it

I didn’t learn about ThingLink until a few months into this school year… and now, I’m hooked! Every unit of study since, I’ve created an interactive ThingLink for students to reference as an anchoring activity, study guide, and “pre-teaching” tool. As my students are currently basking in spring break relaxation, I’ve been preparing this image to help them get focused on the morning that dreaded alarm clock sounds after 9 days off!

Getting Kids Engaged with Primary Sources | Cool Tools

Getting Kids Engaged with Primary Sources | Cool Tools | Lund's K-12 Technology Integration | Scoop.it

The U.S. National Archives Experience Digital Vaults (pictured above) offers students a good introduction to discovering and working with primary source materials. Rather than turning kids loose on millions of records in the National Archives, Digital Vaults focuses on a curated collection of 1,200 items.

Within the site, there are activities designed to help students discover important connections between primary sources. One section, Pathways Challenges, provides quizzes that ask kids to analyze a specific resource and then find the related document within the collection. Teachers and students can create their own quizzes or take advantage of the premade challenges.

Students who create free Digital Vaults accounts can collect primary source documents and images and use them to create digital posters and videos within the available templates.

Great for research and helping kids to read and understand primary source docs.
