Inception: The Science of Creating Dreams

Inception: The Science of Creating Dreams | LUCIDITY | Scoop.it
The scientific reality of dream creation.
Andrew Golden's insight:

Follows after “Inception”’s recent release, and explains the idea of the rebound effect as one way to influence another’s dreams. The rebound effect being the idea that when someone is told not to think about say “elephants”, that is often the first thing the mind imagines. Although more about creating dreams for others, this theory does offer one method in which dreams can be created by the dreamer, with some conscious thought. LUCIDITY, however, inherently allows the dreamer to experiences wanted thoughts and ideas.

article
Andrew Golden's insight:

This article can be considered in conjunction with the “Lucid Dreaming FAQ” that offers a much more in depth description on what lucid dreaming actually is. The title of this article is misleading, for it sets out to debunk some of the misconceptions regarding lucid dreaming. These might be ideas that I directly mention and refute while drafting up descriptions of the dream technology, depending upon whether I feel these misconceptions are commonly considered with the topic of lucid dreaming.

Alternate Reality: How Quantum Physics Can Get You There | Quantum Jumping Blog | LUCIDITY | Scoop.it
Different view on alternate realities - from Plato to modern scientists. Once limited to philosophical discussion, physics gives us the ultimate alternate reality, quantum reality.
Andrew Golden's insight:

This article discusses the 3 primary forms of Western philosophical thinking, when it comes to reality. It then goes on to offer the theory of alternate universes, in which all conceptions of reality are valid at some point, in their respective universes. This information is included for its conceptual description of the multiple notions of reality. The ability to create your own dreams essentially offers another reality in which to live. An implication of this being the elimination of the physical constraints of this reality.

SHELL

Full Commentary and Behind the Scenes here: http://wongfuproductions.com/2011/08/new-shell-short-film-released/ Our lives are shaped by our experiences. Our ...
Andrew Golden's insight:

Shell discusses the possibility of creating memories, on a hyperspecific scale. It tells a personal dramatic romance between two individuals, that discusses foregoing personal inhibitions and indulging romantic thoughts. Although not about dreams explicitly, Shell considers what it might be like to be able to “remember anything”, regardless of whether it happened or not. In the words of the male character, “It’s about the feeling, that’s what matters.” This idea comes to epitomize what LUCIDITY is all about. To take it a step further, individuals are actually able to perform these experiences within the alternate reality of the dream. The aesthetic created by cinematographer/director Wesley Chan is something I hope to capture as well with the imagery that is core to LUCIDITY. Particularly in the memory scene, Chan creates a hyperrealistic, ethereal look and feel after having shot the footage during golden hour and color grading it further. The images appear larger than life, which is exactly what both memory and dreams are. Overall, Shell was a large inspiration for this project, and I cannot deny its influence, as it’s one of my favorite short films by my favorite filmmaker.

Jinsop Lee: Design for all 5 senses

Good design looks great, yes -- but why shouldn't it also feel great, smell great and sound great? Designer Jinsop Lee (a TED Talent Search winner) shares hi...
Andrew Golden's insight:

Offers a discussion on the effectiveness of items that engage the senses, particularly more than one sense. Jinsop argues that overall experience is maximized when as many senses as possible are engaged. Because dreams offer experiences that are dependent upon sensorial cognitive processes, LUCIDITY offers the ability to engage all of the senses. This philosophy is one that is both highly interesting, and definitely worth elaborating on throughout the project, in both image and text.
