Curate Your Own Wiki-Guide with the Wikipedia Book Create Tool

Help:Books - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are almost no limits when creating books from Wikipedia content. A good book focuses on a certain topic and covers it as well as possible. A meaningful title helps other users to have the correct expectation regarding the content of a book.

It's worth keeping in mind that some 'publishers' try to sell books based entirely on Wikipedia content.

Robin Good's insight:

Few people know that it is actually possible to curate Wikipedia content into custom print books or PDF / OpenDocument ebooks that contain exactly the content you want in the order you specify.

Once you are logged into Wikipedia you simply activate the Book Creator Tool and then, from that moment on, everytime you visit a Wikipedia page you can click and add it to your curated Wiki-Book.

There is also a dedicated wiki page where you can manage the pages you have collected and you can reorganized and sort them any way you want, eliminating the pages you don't need.

Unfortunately there is no integrated way to edit and further customize the content of those pages for your own use.

PDF versions are freely downloadable by anyone, print book versions are paid.

N.B.: The price for print books depends on the number of pages, starting with US$ 7.90 for books up to 100 pages. 10% of the gross sales price goes to the Wikimedia Foundation. Books are perfect bound, printed in the dimensions 8.5 inch x 5.5 inch (216 mm x 140 mm) and contain a table of contents, your chapters and articles, licensing information next to an index.

More info about printed versions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Books/Frequently_Asked_Questions ;

Free to use.

Escape Google With These 12 Search Engine Alternatives

Escape Google With These 12 Search Engine Alternatives | Learning, teaching and technology (with a bit of library on the side!) | Scoop.it

Google isn't the only game in town and isn't even the best alternative for many specific search tasks and needs. Here's how to escape Google's grip with Bing, Blekko, BuzzSumo, DuckDuckGo, SocialMention, Quantcast, Topsy, Wolfram|Alpha, and more.

As concerns over the de facto monopoly status of Google continue to grow, I'm reminded of the great philosopher Herman Cain and his infamous line  "blame yourself". As long as "Google" is a generic phrase for Internet search, their dominant position is assured. That said, you can do something about it.There are plenty of Google alternatives and many of these players offer a bettersearch experience, depending on your needs. Here are 12 alternatives to escape your reliance on Google for all things search...

Gamification applied to learning is receiving a lot of attention these days, and corporate learning teams are being tasked with identifying how best to incorporate it into their learning strategies.

At its simplest, gamification is the process of making non-game activities more fun and engaging. Karl Kapp, a respected expert on the convergence of learning and technology, defines gamification as “a careful and considered application of game thinking to solving problems and encouraging learning, using all the elements of games that are appropriate.”

As schools are coming to the end of the year in my part of the world, many of us will begin to think about changes we might make next year in our classroom...and chances are for some that will include the concept of gamification.

This post from Edudemic provides descriptions of three edtech tools that may help you in this process.

* Socrative is a free program that allows you to create questions and students may answer using a wide variety of platforms.

* Kahoot is also a response system, but is designed gaming mechanics to provide motivation and engagement. There are many unique features to this tool and it worth checking out their website at https://getkahoot.com/

* FlipQuiz is similar to Jeopardy. It "makes it easy to design game-show style activities in the classroom that transform learning into an engaging and entertaining experience."

The post includes an introductory video for each tool.

ExamTime's curator insight, May 6, 4:42 AM

I think learners producing content rather than simply consuming is an important point to keep in mind. This idea is the basis of why ExamTime, the elearning web-app I work on, was created. With ExamTime, students create their own Mind Maps, Flashcards and other learning aids to improve their understanding of theory and overall learning.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, May 6, 12:55 PM

Relationships are at the centre of education. It is no longer teacher-centred or learner-centred. In a sense, teachers and students are learning alongside each other. I am not sure it will always be the teacher leading the way although they have to be willing to know when to let go and when to take charge. Content is still incredibly important in that unless it connects to the lives of teachers and students it is not practical and meaningful. Technology is rarely seamlessly integrated.
