James Glanz of The New York Times and Ken Brill, founder of the Uptime Institute, tour a data center and show what is required to keep it going around the clock.
Dan Maas's comment, September 24, 2012 11:45 AM
As you can see in these videos, the Google data centers dwarf anything LPS could deploy on our own. What a wonderful opportunity that Google provides access to data centers like these to public education.... for free.
mgregglps's comment, November 5, 2012 10:24 AM
Isn't it amazing how much $$$ goes into running a data center? We take all those "free" front-end services for granted. Can't live without them!

Welcome · Digital Public Library of America

Welcome · Digital Public Library of America | LPS Tech Updates | Scoop.it

The Digital Public Library of America brings together the riches of America’s libraries, archives, and museums, and makes them freely available to the world. It strives to contain the full breadth of human expression, from the written word, to works of art and culture, to records of America’s heritage, to the efforts and data of science. The DPLA aims to expand this crucial realm of openly available materials, and make those riches more easily discovered and more widely usable and used, through its three main elements:

1. A portal that delivers students, teachers, scholars, and the public to incredible resources, wherever they may be in America. Far more than a search engine, the portal provides innovative ways to search and scan through the united collection of millions of items, including by timeline, map, format, and topic.

2. A platform that enables new and transformative uses of our digitized cultural heritage. With an application programming interface (API) and maximally open data, the DPLA can be used by software developers, researchers, and others to create novel environments for learning, tools for discovery, and engaging apps.

3. An advocate for a strong public option in the twenty-first century. For most of American history, the ability to access materials for free through public libraries has been a central part of our culture, producing generations of avid readers and a knowledgeable, engaged citizenry. The DPLA will work, along with like-minded organizations and individuals, to ensure that this critical, open intellectual landscape remains vibrant and broad in the face of increasingly restrictive digital options. The DPLA will seek to multiply openly accessible materials to strengthen the public option that libraries represent in their communities.

Writing by Dictation Speech Recognition - Is this writing? | LPS Tech Updates | Scoop.it

As technology continues to provide tools to help us write more easily, are we still considered good writers if we depend on these tools?

Online web-based dictation tools can be an incredible resource for reluctant writers. Speaking helps you express your ideas, understand who you are and helps you learn about yourself which is what writing does too. Speaking your thoughts using an online dictation tool like Online Dictation - Speech Recognition ( http://ctrlq.org/dictation/ ) allows students to get their ideas and content down on paper easily. ( Speak > Copy and Paste into a Google Document )

Joan Ganz Cooney Center - QuickReport: Print Books vs. E-books

Joan Ganz Cooney Center - QuickReport: Print Books vs. E-books | LPS Tech Updates | Scoop.it

This QuickReport presents the results of our first QuickStudy exploring parent-child interactions as they read print and digital books together.  We conducted this exploratory study with our SciPlay partners at the New York Hall of Science in Queens, New York in an effort to tackle some of the questions we have about the growing popularity of e-books among readers of all ages. How do adults and children read e-books compared to print books? How might the nature of parent-child conversations differ across platforms? Which design features of e-books appear to support parent-child interaction? Do any features detract from these interactions?
