Despite floods, Thailand celebrates moon festival

This year, flood-ravaged Thailand has plenty of reason to pray for rebirth - and little reason to celebrate.

Loi Krathong Song Lyrics | Women Learning Thai... and some men too ;-)

My Thai teacher just loves to sing. And sometimes, right there in the middle of a lesson, she will stand up and belt out a Thai song.

BURN YOUR NAME (powderfinger)

This music video for powderfinger's BURN YOUR NAME was shot entirely on location in Chiang Mai, Thailand during the Loi Krathong Festival. The release of lanterns (khom loi) brings good luck, as the Thai people believe they send your troubles away.

Chiang Mai, Thailand - A COMPLETE HOMEPAGE - Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong Festival is considered to be the prettiest and most peaceable of all the annual occasions in Thailand. According to the legend, some even seven centuries ago the daughter of a Brahmin priest - her name Nang Nophamas, made a decorative float and showed it to the ruler of the southern Kingdom of Sukhothai. Impressed by its (and possible, her) beauty, the King had it set down on the river and since it's not a bad idea to do what your ruler does, the courtiers followed suit, and the people with them. So much at least for the legend of origin,. The facts may be somewhat different, of course.

Loy Krathong – Thai Festival of Lights

Loy Krathong (ลอยกระทง), sometimes spelled as Loy Kratong, is a colorful festival held every year on the full moon of the twelfth month in the Thai Lunar Calendar. This Thai Festival is held all over the country, but there are particularly beautiful celebrations held in Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, where the celebrations take place over several days. Loi "to float" Krathong "offering" is a festival to pay respect to the spirit of the waters. While this festival is celebrated all over Thailand, the Lanna culture of Northern Thailand couples it with Yi Peng, the lantern festival.

Loy Krathong in Bangkok: Official events canceled | CNNGo.com

Loy Krathong is usually one of Thailand's most widely celebrated events, a means of releasing one's accumulated bad vibes to the waters in the form of floating floral arrangements -- the krathongs -- which are topped with candles and incense.

TAT cancels Loy Krathong Festival as hotel and cruise businesses lose incomes : National News Bureau of Thailand

"...the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has cencelled the Color of the River, Loy Krathong Festival 2011 in Bangkkok and all festivities along the Chao Phraya River..."

If this report proves to be correct, please do note that the festivities reported to be cancelled are only those along the Chao Phraya river. Cancelling a festival in Thailand is no easy task. It can be safely assumed that Loy Krathong will still be celebrated throughout the kingdom and nowhere more than in Chiang Mai where the traditional Yee Peng festival is a major highlight in the calendar.

Lanterns in the sky: Sights from Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai, Thailand

I always wanted to witness the festival as just seeing the photographs and videos lead me to think this is such a beautiful festival to experience first hand! Loy Krathong is the Thai equivalent to Diwali. You could say it’s Thailand’s ‘festival of lights’. I chose the dates based on information I gathered online, but even after arriving here and asking the hotel staff, I still couldn’t get any concrete information on the schedule of events.
