With health authorities saying the world is facing an obesity epidemic and with a recent major study finding that – for the first time – more people now die from obesity-related illnesses like heart attacks and strokes than malnutrition, scientists have been tackling the fat problem.

 

Recent approaches to this problem include looking at ways to slow down the biological clock and converting calorie-storing white fat cells into heat-generating brown fat cells. Now, a new study has found that linking two hormones into a single molecule could lead to improved treatments for medical conditions such as obesity.

There’s little doubt that coffee’s promise stems from its abundance of highly healthful polyphenol-type compounds.
 
Although polyphenols are often called antioxidants, they don’t exert direct antioxidant effects in the body. Instead, they influence gene expression to produce antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other beneficial effects.

In a recent study, maintaining high blood levels of caffeine appeared to help adults over 65 ward off Alzheimer's disease. The study participants started with mild cognitive impairment, but none of the participants with higher blood levels developed Alzheimer's during the 2-4 year period.

Consumption of four or more cups of coffee per day may be associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer, suggests new data.

 

The study- published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition- analyses data from almost half a million people, finding that drinking several cups of coffee a day could help protect against colon cancer by between 15% and 25%.
