Blocking Telomerase Kills Cancer Cells but Provokes Resistance, Progression | MD Anderson Cancer Center

Inhibiting telomerase, an enzyme that rescues malignant cells from destruction by extending the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes, kills tumor cells but also triggers resistance pathways that allow cancer to survive and spread, scientists reported.

"Telomerase is overexpressed in many advanced cancers, but assessing its potential as a therapeutic target requires us to understand what it does and how it does it," said senior author Ronald DePinho, M.D., president of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Vilified free radicals boost tissue healing and regeneration in tadpoles (and perhaps humans)

Vilified free radicals boost tissue healing and regeneration in tadpoles (and perhaps humans) | Longevity science | Scoop.it

Oxygen-containing free radicals are commonly believed to be harmful to cells. However, research indicates they actually play a vital role in the regeneration of the tails of tadpoles. The finding could have profound implications for the healing and regeneration of human tissue.

New reasons discovered for supplementing with alpha lipoic acid

New reasons discovered for supplementing with alpha lipoic acid | Longevity science | Scoop.it

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a potent antioxidant also used by the body to convert blood sugar into energy.

Emerging research indicates that ALA may have neuroprotective qualities and help to repair nerve damage and maintain healthy vision.

ALA combines synergistically with both glutathione and CoQ10 to maximize free radical protection...

These are just two of the mounting studies on ALA and glucose management:

--ALA helps prevent the oxidative stress that is linked to impaired glucose management.

--It may also help maintain healthy fasting glucose levels http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22374556
