The Space Review: Financing the purchase of a new Interplanetary Spaceship

The Space Review: Financing the purchase of a new Interplanetary Spaceship | Long Life | Scoop.it
Some years ago, I identified a challenge for SpaceX to be able to insure its flights. Since that time, they have offered reflight insurance. At Tesla, when buyers were concerned about resale value of the cars, Elon Musk personally guaranteed he would buy them back. Tesla also proved to owners that there’s value in a car with 80 percent of the range of the big-battery Model S (which is about the degraded capacity of a 10-year-old battery) by offering a smaller battery version of the Model S and selling it. There are numerous challenges to settling Mars as Musk intends to do. One is interest rates. In his keynote speech at the International Astronautical Congress last month, Musk assumed a five-percent (real) interest rate to amortize equipment. This will require almost as much innovation in finance as he has made in rocket and electric car economics...
