It's January. Always an interesting food month.

Enticing offers from restaurants large and small, great and good.

Let's see what it brings,

I'll be posting in a homey, vaguely healthful sort of way, interspersed with special offers ranging from restaurants to supermarkets with maybe a few good ideas from food bloggers and pop uppers along the way. Enjoy the ride!

Fabulous. February!

Why fabulous?

Because that's how I feel on a mainly raw, vegan, plant-based eating plan! Way. (for me) to continue to go. It's been two months since I really began to think about what I ate, in relation to my health and the difference in how I look and feel has been nothing short of miraculous.

The Nutribullet is my new best friend.

Green smoothies, interesting , varied, uncooked, organic fruit and vegetables in salads and other assemblages with original flavourings, all natural,  utter deliciousness.  Thing is, I'm mainly eating at home until I find places offering the healthy food I like to eat at affordable prices. I'm looking forward to sampling raw and/or vegan food when I'm out and about in the city over the coming months as we move towards Spring. I'll also be checking out the best places to picnic in the city, both indoors and out, so that bringing freshly prepared food from home can always be an option. In the meantime, I shall share food ideas and recipes to try at home..I watch a lot of Raw Food videos at the moment, I find them a great inspiration .Whatever you eat , wherever you eat, keep it fresh and flavoursome, have fun with it., and as Dara from L.A. says, "Get your greens on!" Hide them in food, if you must, but don't avoid them., the darker, the greener, the better. They are what put that spring in your step, even in winter. Trust a convert :-)

✿¸.•*¨`*•..¸✿.  ✿¸.•*¨`*•..¸✿

November! Raw food month! Bring it on!

✿¸.•*¨`*•..¸✿.  ✿¸.•*¨`*•..¸✿

October! Getting colder!

Warm foods and warming wines now required.

February arrives with downpourings of rain and  outpourings of love. There's even the distant hope of Spring. Food wise? I'm still gravitating towards warming soups, to deter mega monster ugly bugs.  Taste buds need reprogramming soonest! Oh! and lots of bubbles to fizz up the mood!

Skip Garden & Kitchen

Skip Garden & Kitchen | London Food and Drink | Scoop.it

"Our home is in the middle of the King's Cross development area, a construction site of 67 acres. Among the cranes and the cement mixers, the apartment buildings and the office blocks, our Skip Garden is an urban oasis with a twist - a portable garden that moves to different locations on the King's Cross site as and when land is sold and built on. It is a garden of a thousand hands, built by young people and local business volunteers, together creating a new and sustainable community. It is a unique space where apple trees, pumpkins and beans grow out of skips, and tomatoes, ginger and chillies grow under polytunnels made with water pipes and polythene.

The Skip Garden is largely self sustaining, thanks to a full complement of organic gardening practices, such as •aerobic and worm composting •fertilising with comfrey juice •companion and rotational planting •rain water harvesting, and •maintaining bee-hives All of the food we grow is used in our Skip Garden Kitchen. We also work with local businesses, restaurants, community groups and schools to help them create their own unique growing spaces. See here for planters and rooftops we've created and maintain".

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:
A lovely community enterprise in the city! Worth our support, so let's go and eat there!

 Jackson & Rye Richmond
Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:
A restaurant with great river views and a pretty good set lunch menu at £11.95 for two courses. I was visiting Richmond this week and returned to J&R for a late lunch. I had the salt and pepper squid which was tasty and a generous helping for a starter. The main course of sea bream was much enjoyed by my husband, but it did need a side order of chips to bulk it out. The house white is fine and as mentioned already, the views both from the outside terrace and the inside window seats are splendid! Very friendly staff. We shall return.

Vegetarian Restaurant London   Vanilla Black

Vegetarian Restaurant London   Vanilla Black | London Food and Drink | Scoop.it

"Vanilla Black has a reputation as one of the finest vegetarian restaurants in London.

The menu challenges the bland, uninspiring misconceptions about vegetarian dishes"

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

I had a birthday meal here recently. It was a treat and I have to say I was pleased that I didn't have to pick up the tab. I could probably have bought a new ipad for the cost of the meal. We were a party of four, which included three meat eaters, two of whom eat out at high end restaurants A LOT and in that sense are quite exacting in what they expect from restaurants. They want satisfying, tasteful and tasty food, excellent service, beautiful surroundings you know the drill. Did VB deliver? Were they impressed? You will have to read to the end to find out.

Meanwhile  there's me. not vegan, not vegetarian but oh a good 80% of my diet is vegan, 10% is vegetarian, 10% is fish. It's taken me a while to work it out but that's what keeps me happy, healthy and sociable! I hate the word foodie but I do adore delicious food and innovative usages of fruit and vegetables .When eating out in a restaurant, I like great tasting food that involves lots of plant life and is value for money. oh and delivered in a welcoming ..charming...friendly environment. with knowledgable staff.

So, what did I make of Vanilla Black?

You'll have to come back later to find out as breakfast is calling me! Read the selected reviews in the meantime.

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:
I'm not so sure about a shop-bought frozen-ready meal although these can be good for the time-pressed. or when we are feeling lazy. or want to read poetry instead of getting out the chopping board! And with 15% off veggie meals until the end of May, I can see why this could be tempting.

I think I'd like to try this reassuringly familiar red wine with a homemade mushroom ragu. Seems a shame to put a glass of it into the sauce but I bet it would make all the difference to the taste!

This vegetable-packed tagine is full of flavour and extremely hearty. It uses Ras El Hanout, a well known spice blend from Morocco.
Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

I feel the need to make this! Spicy, aromatic and vegan!

I adore chickpeas, the bigger and fatter, the better. Mine come from BestCo in Kilburn. The spices from award-winning family- run Spice Kitchen sound rather special. A business based on love, sourcing the very best and freshest ingredients for their spice mixes. We have got to sample that smell and taste!

Visit the world without a passport! From China to India via Norway?
Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:
Recently, I went on a guided walk around Little India, Wembley. A new experience for this longtime Londoner. One I'd like to repeat. The Insights! The culture! The temple! The colours!  The food shops!  The homely, subtly spiced veggie thalis! I know I sound a tad exclamatory but it really was a lovely experience. A #sensory delight. I recommend heading over to their website. Check out what tours are currently available, find one that appeals and away you go!

Still on the subject  of the food shops, our excellent guide pointed me in the direction of the best place ever to buy super fresh nuts and spices at amazing prices. And I was told where to go for great pots and pans and much more. All will be revealed to you on the tour!

Cafe Also

Cafe Also | London Food and Drink | Scoop.it

CAFE ALSO: BRUNCH AND BROWSE

It was an article by John Walsh scooped in THE WEEK which brought this place to my attention - a restaurant and an adjoining bookshop? Sounds very “Solitary Diner”! So I visited. I got an 82 bus from Finchley Rd Tube station onward toward North Finchley; a longish ride but worth it! To be pedantic, four stops after Golders Green. And then, here indeed it was, ALSO; very unpretentious, rather like a sea-side shack but hiding metropolitan and Mediterranean delights and a bookshop.

I’m not sure what the “Also” refers to, whether shop and also a restaurant – or a restaurant with book shop. Either way for me, who delights in reading and having lunch – this was very heaven on a leaf-browning, blowy October afternoon in 2015.

I put in my order for late brunch - their special omelette and went for a browse:this was Charing Cross Road come to Temple Fortune; art books and books about football; all very eclectic and a considerable range of remaindered books which always makes browsing interesting; one man’s fish and all that! Or is it the instinct to find the golden nugget (rare book) amongst the dross?

Re-entering the restaurant, I felt very disposed toward the rest of the day.

I ordered a large glass of the 2013 Canaan White from Galilee and encountered a very pleasant, softly spoken white wine; probably a red would have been better with the generous ingredients, cheese, mushroom, tomatoes, spinach and onion. The omelette was served on a heavy (v hot) iron pan and you could really taste the organic in the free range eggs!

I was only having brunch but the menu has invited me back of an evening and indeed again and again for lunch. Cafe Also is an ethical vegetarian/fish restaurant and I cannot praise it enough. I am sure one can find the menu on the cafe website.

I spoke to Ali, the Egyptian Chef and part owner; I asked Ali what was his great passion in life – he said, “Being here.” That was evident in the attitude of all staff.

Before leaving, I “Also” spoke briefly to the fellow proprietor, Michael Joseph; he said he might intend to develop in certain directions, modernise; I said to him, “Don’t change, it’s perfect. It should be a London literary landmark!”

Perhaps it is.

On my way out of what I do hope can remain a time warp, I bumped into Norman Balon, legendary ex-landlord of The Coach and Horses in Soho – indeed for decades a London landmark. We exchanged a bit of talk, I said to him “his” place had changed a lot since his departure. He said, “If you don’t change, you die.”

Maybe I need to think about becoming more trendy?

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

Reading the above review has made me want to visit this cafe and bookshop. Soonish. Take a look at their menu! A cafe that serves up innovative fish and vegetarian dishes, with books on the side?  Sounds right up my street.
