Autodesk Exchange Apps - SketchUp Import into AutoCAD

Autodesk Exchange Apps - SketchUp Import into AutoCAD | Logiciels d'architecture | Scoop.it

The SketchUp Import plug-in adds two ways to get SKP files into your AutoCAD drawings. Use the IMPORTSKP command to convert a SketchUp file, stored in a local or shared folder, and insert the model into the current drawing. The GETMODEL command allows you to browse or search the Google 3D Warehouse and download SketchUp models directly into your drawing.

Converting a SketchUp model to a Revit Family – Video

When converting SketchUp 3D models to Autodesk Revit the most important steps are the initial ones performed within SketchUp. No matter how simple a model is, it is good to think of how it will be used, and how the layers and layer names will later affect the Revit model.

Revit OpEd: Should I Use Revit for this Project?

It isn't a surprising question, it's asked often. I wrote a post before called "Yeah but". That's the kind of response that often comes after answering the question with, "Yeah, you should".

"Yeah but... the architect isn't using Revit, the engineers aren't using Revit, we don't really need 3D for this project, this project doesn't have the margin, this project is fast track, this project isn't big enough, this project is too big"... and so on.

A recent one I heard was, "The architect isn't using Revit, should we use Revit MEP for this project?"

When Revit Systems was released in 2006, the essence of Autodesk's marketing commentary was, "this is new software so it probably doesn't make sense to tackle a project with it unless the architecture team is using Revit too." I don't think it is still true six years later. Sure we benefit from the modelling effort in architecture and structure but we can still benefit from the effort without them.

Around the World With BIM: AECbytes Feature Article

There is no doubt that BIM adoption in the AEC industry has come a long way since the term was introduced in 2002—most of the larger firms are using BIM on many of their projects, and it has come part of the standard lexicon of the AEC industry. We would be hard-pressed to find anyone working in the industry who has not heard of BIM. But most of us have a rather myopic view of BIM, quite naturally so; we are aware of what’s going on with BIM implementation in our own countries, but not that much about what is happening in other countries. This article is an attempt to capture the key developments in BIM implementation in different countries around the world, so that we have a better global perspective on BIM. We are all aware that the pace of globalization is rapidly increasing, so it is helpful to stay informed about technological developments elsewhere and be better prepared in case they also have an impact on us.

Autodesk DesignScript to do battle with Grasshopper and GenerativeC

Most of you know what computational, parametric and associative design IS and what it MEANS. Previously, Bentley had a strong product in Generative Components, and we all know about Grasshopper / Rhino. But it appears that Autodesk is coming to the party - with a solution called DesignScript.

They have employed the man behind GenerativeComponents - Dr Robert Aish. Apparently, this programmatic design solution has been in the works for Four Years!

It will be very interesting to see if Autodesk can capture the imagination of designers in the same way that Grasshopper has, or if they can offer some sort of realistic BIM integration quickly (like GC).
